I know this is slightly off-topic, but just now I realized how awesome it would be to have a manga industry in this country that rivals or is similar to Japan's.

It may be far off, but it would be great to see some real quality series from authors/artists outside of Japan. I'm talking Naruto quality and popularity, here... It would be really cool, I think.

Unless there already are some? I don't know... I've only really read Japanese manga.

Didn't TokyoPop did that with OEL manga? Look where they are now (not being mean here). What is selling is yaoi manga. The yaoi collection is growing at the shelves of Borders. Seven Seas did the same thing with OEL manga. I collected Amazing Luna. I stopped collecting after the third volume because it was taking such a long time for them to publishing it. It was like a year for each volume (may be wrong about the time releases). Volume 4 was finally released but I was not interested in it anymore.

The main concern I have is the Shojo magazine because I subscribed to for two years. How is this going to effect it and the manga releases?

They did it wrong. Their business plan was based on developing intellectual properties rather than telling stories- they wanted the merchandising, the spin-off media, the animated adaptation, and so forth. Cart before the horse. They also made a mistake by calling it "manga". The point has been made that there's nothing that says manga has to be Japanese in origin. This is true in all respects save one- the idiots who insist it has to be. Like them or not, those ignorant buffoons keep you in business, and to some extent you have to play their game. If you call your work "manga", and Japanese is not your first language, they jump on you and yell and scream that your a hack, a rip-off artist, a corporate tool with no respect for Japanese culture, and so forth. They do this, annoyingly, before they even look at your work, and they do it loudly enough that other people who don't know that they're screaming idiots hear and figure your work sucks.

Why yes, it DOES annoy me. Can you tell?

Anyway, the smart authors don't bother with that cow manure. They do the exact same work they were going to anyway, call it a "graphic novel", and ignore the fanbabies in favor of people who actually give a damn about literature that doesn't read right-to-left.

Wow, he left in an economy like this? I hope he knew what he was doing at the time. Hopefully they'll be able to get those projects back up and running soon though.

We already have them. They're called comics. They might not be as trendy as comics from Japan, but you shouldn't ignore your own native cartooning.

Oh, I see how it is. I should have written "manga" instead of "series", because that's what I'm actually interested in.
