Kind of ironic, because back when Eva and Escaflowne came out, there used to be fan arguments about which of the two was the better mech show.

Don't like the fact that the changed Asuka's name, but I'll live as long as the film is good.

So the name rumor was true. I'm not liking it much either. Particularly it's similarity to "Ayanami". That, and it's even more of a mouthful now. After 15 years, if it's not broke, don't fix it. Still, I guess it's just a name. I'm sure there's a reason for it. Has to be with the new character's full name revealed. Ayanami-Shikinami-Makinami, something's definitely up. So much for the Sohryu.

Good to have further confirmation of Miyamura's return. Her voice makes the character for me.

Interesting to see Sakamoto on board.

Asuka Langley Shikinami just doesn't sound right to me at all.

Soryu always worked because it was short and it rolled well off your tongue altogether. Shikinami is like putting a whole new effort into your name.

Not to mention Shikinami rhymes with Ayanami, so it'll sound confusing.

Hmm, interesting. I'm a little annoyed by Asuka's name change, but that's not a tremendously big deal. The really big thing to me is Sakamoto Maaya's involvement. I've always thought she should be involved with more anime projects.

The feisty red-headed fraulein and fan-favorite will always be Soryu to me as well. It's gonna take me forever to memorize, let alone get used to the name change.

Looking ahead quite a bit, I would imagine it's gonna a heck of an adjustment for Tiffany Grant once Funi starts working on the Eva 2.0 dub (I know, it's purely speculation this early on, but I would think this is a highly probable option)...

"Hi, I'm Asuka Langley Sor..."

"Cut...it's not Soryu anymore, Ms. Grant"

"Oh, crap, that's right..."

"Okay, from the top, Ms. Grant."

"Hi, I'm Asuka Langley...Shi...Shiyanami...no, Shiki...Shikinami...whatever...uh, charmed, huh? (mutters to herself off mike) New name sounds too much like "Wonder Girl's" last name...Damn that crazy Anno!"

To be fair, I know it's going to be just as much of an adjustment for Miyamoo as well (do they still nickname Asuka's original seiyuu that?). Thankfully, the name change is a minor quibble; the fact that Asuka will still look and sound like Asuka is more important.

(BTW as you can surmise I enjoy and appreciate both the original Japanese as well as the English dubs of the EVA franchise and have no real preference of one over the other.)

Maaya Sakamoto! She's one of my favourite voice actresses, her voice is just so soothing to listen to. This almost makes up for Asuka's name change.
Regarding Asuka though, has anything been said about her background? Meaning, is she going to have some of her German roots, or is she going to be 100% Japanese in the new movies?

Why did they change Asuka's name?

Well, I can't say that the new name is pleasing to the western ear but, seeing all the changes that they are already making in this movie, I assume that they plan to do something with the new name. Also, I can only imagine the confusion this will cause when it comes time for dubs and suddenly the whole cast is getting the names wrong. Laughing

I'm really looking forward to this new movie nonetheless - I hope to catch it in theaters in Japan but I have a feeling that tickets might be scarce.

Am I remembering wrong or were these four movies not originally planned to all see release within a 12-18 month period following the first movie's release? Are we now to wait two years between each movie as things currently stand? I'd have found one year apart annoying enough, but two? It gets harder to care about these movies all the time.

I watched the first 'remake' a few months back, and while it was visually pleasing, it seemed largely pointless as it changed so little from the original show.

I'll still watch them all no doubt, but this whole 'remake' they're doing with the show is just 'so what?' to me at this point.

This is "Makinami Mari Illustrious", there's already a figure being solicited.

Hopefully there will be a good reason for the name change. I agree with Renaisance Otaku, they're up to something.

I'll bet Funimation will be defiant when they pick this up for dubbing and just change her name back to Asuka Soryu Langley. Or just drop the 3rd name altogether and refer to her simply as Asuka Langley. Y'know what, as long as they're still calling her Asuka at all I could really care less. BTW, new character looks interesting.

The important thing is that Yuko Miyamura is reprising her role as Asuka, whether or not it's Langely Soryu or Langely Shikinami is unimportant to me (though the former sounds better).

Now, I wonder if Funimation is getting back the original cast for the movie dub. I have come to prefer the Japanese voices, since ADV dubs don't hold up nowadays, but after so long, it would be strange to hear anyone but Spike Spencer as Shinji Ikari and Tiffany Grant as Asuka.

The big changes start with the second film.

I agree with both of you. To change the name of one of the main characters so that it falls in a pattern would suggest there's something to this.

...or it could be just for the hell of it. Wouldn't surprise me. Laughing

Edit: Oh yeah, yay with the others for Miyamura returning, and I'm pleased at the choice of Sakamoto for the new character.
