What are the qualifications?

I like anime.

I think I would rock.

Plus, I know the solution to the troubled economy.

Perhaps the SPJA has been getting more complaints over comments than we think.

I sorta get the idea that the people working in the SPJA did not like the idea of working under a woman or something like that. It's obvious that she saw the industry for what it was and the real trends that were happening. Maybe she spoke too truly about what reality was, and the money backers did not want to hear reality, but rather fiction instead.

Her being a woman has nothing to do with it. That's actually a very dumb assertion.

I've been to the staffer meetings several years ago at AX was witnessed the CEO at the time unceremoniously get kicked out.

The fact is that AX has out grown itself to the point where they really should totally rely on volunteers. The logistics are WAY too big now with crowd control, venue locations, making guests and high rolling vendors happy. I can see why Viz Media bailed out on AX several years ago and never looked back. They totally mismanage things and blow off opportunities to the point where it's embarrassing. For example the SKIN show was several years back was a disaster. And some Jpop singer posted a blog on her site slamming her visit at AX.

It is the biggest show in the country but it needs strong professional planning and logistics. They need to work with Reed Exhibits. They run the anime conventions out in New York as well as Book Expo.

Actually AX staff was really fond of the CEO. Things happened.

stagedive_25:
Previous CEO years ago was not a good CEO.
Viz hasn't returned to AX because of financial conflicts and not getting what they wanted.
It's not AX staff's fault that the Skin concert was late. It actually relates to one of the members.
The Jpop singer was upset because american fans didn't stay behind after her concert and just left compared to other hardcore otakus who would have stayed. After receiving an apology for the misunderstanding, she did later stated that she enjoyed her AX experience.
You state that you want AX to "totally rely" on volunteers, yet you recommend AX to rely on an outsource group.

Believe me or not, I just wanted to set the facts straight (even ambiguously for obvious reasons) instead of letting poor assumptions run amuck.

Speaking of getting the facts straight, you are so totally off about the Halko Momoi concert to the point that you must be making stuff up. If I remember correctly, she posted the slam BEFORE her concert (making your reason for why she was upset impossible). She slammed AX for many things including:
Poor treatment
Disorganized execution
No hotel room (wtf)
Being told her concert was canceled

I was at AX 2007 and it had more problems of any AX I have ever attended.

The volunteer staff situation has always been an issue at AX. No one ever knows whats going on. Anyone who has ever had experience asking the "blue-vested" staff will tell you how useless they are.

I am very curious about the staff liking the previous CEO but "stuff happened". Since it tells me nothing and the actual news article says she was dismissed and "terminated" I can only assume that they were not very fond of her.

Hm maybe I've mistaken it for another artist. My mistake then. Yes I heard that didn't go well, luckily her concert worked out from lots of scrambling. I will agree AX2007 was a troublesome year for staffers and attendees.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with AX staff. Blue-vested staffers are however ONLY in charge of volunteers, asking them about certain things outside what they are required to know is unreasonable. Just because we are staffers does NOT mean we know everything (even though we wish we did know so we'd be more helpful to our attendees). We only know what is required in our department to function. I would believe the best group of people to ask questions are the Info booth staffers and perhaps even Access Control (red-vested staffers). I heard it went smoothly for Info last year because of the new system of information sharing that was used.

The CEO was well liked among the staffers that I have talked to. She made the effort to try to know as many staffers as she could, was involved in many departments during con (working with us staffers) and had direct interactions with the attendees as well. Her dismissal was rather abrupt and a big shock to all of us when it occurred. We ARE still kept in the dark about why it occurred. I assume it has something to do with her work from other years (beyond my limited 3 years as a normal staffer) and there are legal issues. I cannot say much beyond what I know of. We staffers can't dwell on it and can only plan for a more successful AX this coming year and hope for the better. I hope we find another CEO that loves anime/manga and wants AX to run smoothly as our previous CEO.

AX2007 is one of the years we staffers groan about when we have to reminiscence since it was horrible for us as well. Usually the red-vested staffers with the walkie talkies have more access to information since they can just ask anyone on there. Normal staffers don't really know all that much sadly. Yeah I heard info for 2007 wasn't good either. I'm glad AX2008 went much better for you then.

AX should be running just fine without a permanent CEO I would think. Departments still run independently.

You know, maybe AX should find some way of making this apparent to attendees. Some combination of the following: an addition to the red-vest that makes it clear that these are the people to ask questions to, mention of the difference between the different vest colors in the program guide (just checked my '08 guide, it's not there) and having non red-vested staffers suggest a proper source of information instead of just saying "I don't know."

I've been to AX every year since 2003 and I was not aware that red-vested staff would be the better people to ask questions too.

I do know that I often enough had trouble getting the answers to questions that I stopped bothering and for the last couple years I just take out my phone and call more senior people. Obviously that option isn't available to most attendees and, to be honest, I'd rather not do it myself.

Anyways, this is pretty far off-topic, just a suggestion that you might want to pass along at the next meeting.
