The Los Angeles Times newspaper reports that Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind) will appear for the first time at San Diego's Comic-Con International (CCI) next month.

I wonder if he'll be able to handle the Totoro cosplay. Laughing Seriously, he's the least geeky guy you'd expect there. And I just know he hates otaku, so I'm wondering if he can deal with the American variation. Laughing

And I really wanted to make the L.A. thing, but certain not-so-nice-people chose to buy up a ton of seats and lock me out, thus forcing me to wait in line, with no guarantee that I'll get in, either. But it's cheaper than plopping down hundreds of bucks for only one event I might be interested in, so I'm still not sure which way to go. The only reason I even wanna see him is to get some stuff autographed, since I already caught him for Spirited Away. [To be honest, I'd love Takahata to be here again, so I can buy him a beer, since he seems like that kind of guy you'd want to just shoot the breeze with, while Miyazaki feels like a "tea ceremony" kind of guy whom you'd have to really be careful not to step on his toes. But then some guy who interviewed him told me he's into Bugs Bunny, so what do I know? ]

Wow. And I was sad he was going to be in NorCal while I would be at SDCC. Got to make this a priority... wonder where he'll be there.

I for one am stoked, but fear that this will be in Hall H and thus, I may have to pass unless it is first thing in the morning. No way in hell would I wait in line during the day outside to get a backrow seat. But I would love to see how he interacts with the crowd considering I have heard he is notoriously shy (evasive?) with press. Having 6500+ people staring at you and hanging on to every word may be unnerving to this man.

I'm pretty sure the LA event was legitimately sold out (considering tickets were sold for $5) and its in the hub of Hollywood and animation. Plus, if you need to decide which event to turn to, you may want to keep note that according to This, the chances of autographs seems slim. Heck, even at Comic-Con, if a man is press shy, why would you think he would want to be surrounded by people pressing DVDs and the like to his face to get a sig. Although, I am a big autograph hound, I am keeping my expectations to just listening and getting a pic of him during his panel. IF I can get into whichever room he is in.

They were contacted at 10 in the morning that day. There's no effing way anyone has that kind of free time, especially in the economy. It's definitely industry insiders, dammit.

I had a slim chance of asking Miyazaki a question, but I managed to snag a front-row seat in a theater where they're reserved, so you never know. Wink

Patachu: Not sure about L.A., but probably insane at SDCC.

Calling it now: dude will show up for a pre-approved 10 minute chat with an interviewer and will quickly exit, and that's it. I wouldn't be shocked if this took place during Disney's annual SDCC Hall H panel, with John Lasseter in attendance asking him a handful of questions to promote the theatrical release of Ponyo in between Pixar and Disney Feature Animation presentations.

Which is still cool and fun, but anyone hoping for access to the guy or a signature/interview/whatever.. yeah, not going to happen.

Zac: I managed to chat with Takahata outside his screenings. And Miyazaki doesn't really need the money, so he's probably using the whole thing as an excuse to get to know his American fans, since he's pretty much made up his mind about his Japanese fans. Rolling Eyes

I can't believe after reading this,

you were able to crush a man's dream in a mere paragraph.

Many, if not most, Japanese guests that are way less significant than Miyazaki, offer their fans only this level of "goodies." Get used to it. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Eh, I'm expecting this much anyway. Most of the time I get around just to seeing Voice Actors at Comic-Con, and not so much as celebrities and directors.

Most of what I said before was a little sarcasm. *cough*

can somebody with better eyes than me, show me where this is in the latimes article? 'because the way I read the itninerary he is going to be one.busy.dude. flying back and forth...

as far as Zac's comment... I wouldn't expect Lassiter, or a Joss to sign autographs either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but yeah, I'd expect him to be in the barn during disney.

And that is to the good. If you get those people hyped about seeing a show...
they tell two friends.
and so on, and so on.

Well, I suppose people will turn up to get a glimpse of him anyway- he's that renowned.
No major upset for me. I respect him for his importance to the fanbase, but have no particular desire to meet him in person.

Forget Totoro. I remember seeing a Japanese cosplayer dressed up as Miyazaki with whole glasses, beard, and outfits. That's what I call extreme hero worship.

What about Satoshi Kon? He never showed up at any fan conventions. Plus he movies shows total disdain for Otaku. For Miyazaki's case, SDCC became mainstream to attract Hollywood celebrities.

He showed up at the NY one six years ago. And I'm not entirely sure if he "hates" otaku, since he's a closet-Ultraman fan himself. But he definitely hates what they consider popular.

IIRC, Satoshi Kon has been to a fan event in America before. I think it was Big Apple Anime Fest in 2003.
