And this is why GAINAX will never stop making EVA-related stuff. It's a gold-mine. (irregardless of the merits of the remakes).

I'd say it's like Star Trek, but I'd call Gundam Japan's Star Trek. Total nerds examine and revel in the minutia, but everybody in the country knows the basics and has there own "favorite" character and series.

Wow, so the 2nd movie surpassed the first in box office numbers.

It's funny that the numbers are small but that's huge in Japan when compared to our animated films that make anywhere between $100 to $200 million. Of course if it's a crappy flick then you get $10,000 to less than $50,000.

Yep, if there are 2 things that are huge among the "otaku" it's Gundam and Eva. And I did say the same thing about Gundam being compared to Star Trek.

I've heard Gundam called Japan's Star Trek and Eva as Japan's Star Wars.

I've heard Gundam called Japan's Star Trek and Eva as Japan's Star Wars.

That's one way to look at it. Both of those anime have a large amount of related material and an even larger number of followers who are willing to go to great lengths to protect their love interest from criticism (myself not excluded from that statement lol). Eva and Gundam are true classics of the sci-fi genre of anime and will continue to influence series in the future.

From what I've heard, this one is actually different. The first movie really felt like they just rebroadcast the first few episodes. They didn't change up anything in the story at all. I've heard that this one starts with an Eva battle featuring a new pilot so i'm thinking it's going to be very different from the previous story, which is what I was hoping these films would be.

@Chrno2
Even a bad flick can pull a few million opening weekend. Even when pokemon was dead over here and "tanked" at the box office, it made like 8 million opening weekend and went on to gross like 17 million total.

Even with no mainstream advertising, I think an Eva movie would at least be profitable in the US if they released it on 1,000 screens (compared to transformers releasing on 4,000+ screens and biggest pokemon movie opening on 3,000 screens http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=anime.htm).

The list in the link is pretty telling. You've got films making half a million dollars that were only shown at two theaters in the whole country. I know it wouldn't be 100% linear, but imagine if that same film was on 4 screens... or 100 screens.

Every anime film that's been given a legitimate release has gone on to make more than $15M at the box office. That not record breaking, but compared to what it cost to advertise (very little) and compared to what the films make in JPN, it's often the bulk of the revenue.

Neat, it beat Transformers. (I liked transfromers fyi)

I've always considered Gundam the Star Trek due to technical level and series reincarnation value even though its merchandising level is more Star Wars. I've always thought series like Yamato and the other related stuff would be the other end of the space rivalry and what not. The ageless "should never touch" type like the actual Star Wars films. Although I don't mind any of the newer stuff. Of course I'm more casual when it comes to all of those series, japanese and US, so i might be wrong. I guess another way to see it is in the past it was Gundam and Yamato type series but now a days its Gundam and EVA.

I personally would place EVA in its own catergory that Gundam technically falls in due to being giant robots. But I can see on an nerdness level why you would include it with the Star Wars/Trekkie culture. In any case I can't wait to see it State side. I enjoyed the first remake, can't wait until the legal copies come out, and expect this one to be just as good.

Um, Eva is from the 90s, wouldn't you normally compare Star Wars and Star Trek to Gundam and Macross?

True, but I'm sure they are licensing them and selling a boatload of merch to boot.

In terms of licensing, not true. Gainax has absolutely no connection to the Rebuild movies whatsoever. However, I'm sure they're benefiting from the surge of interest in Evangelion merchandising nonetheless.

Except Macross isn't as popular as EVA or Gundam, but yeah I guess that would be the right comparison.

Transformers 2 was just one big loud mindless fight after the next.

I find it absolutely hilarious that Eva beat Transformers so thoroughly.
I've been asked by people at work constantly if I've seen Transformers 2 yet, and they're usually shocked when I tell them that I have zero interest in Transformers. They keep trying to tell me that I'd really like it, cause it's got cool action. Then I have to tell them that I want my giant robots to make me think, and that mindless explosions just aren't going to work.
2.0 is going to be so awesome.
