I say let them go for it and I hope they do well. The manga publishers don't usually let the mangaka do everything the way they want them done and often times force them to stretch something good out to turn a profit.

Let the mangaka tell it how it was meant to be I say. Less stress on them when they don't have to deal with those deadlines. Now if they'd only pay us scanlators to translate there projects for overseas audiences and get rid of these american publishers Razz

Wishful thinking about the scanlation thing. Still, not bad so far for such an important idea this manga-ka has been doing.

From some insider's info I've gathered recently, it's not as far-fetched as you might think.

Maybe this is a better way for artists. They can keep control and flow of projects. Deadlines suck and sometimes spoil their work.

As for scans, it would be cool if there was a way for fans and the creators to come to some co-op effort. It could help lesser known titles a lot. How to monetise is the problem, but that's what paypal is for.

dormcat, I know you won't say where you get your sources per se, however, how do you get them?

This is a good thing. They could probably go up on the price, but I guess they're following the the iPhone store model of pricing things so cheap that people buy them without even thinking about the price.

LOL @ the scanlation thing. I think it's ridiculous expect a scanlator to be honest or trustworthy. What about scanlations shows that the people doing it are wiling to honor business agreements and not break the rules/laws at any chance they get? That's like the total opposite of scanlating by default.

considering it's self published, a very low price is a win-win for everyone. Had he gone through a commercial publisher, I doubt he himself would be getting that much more at all, while consumers would certainly be charged many times more.

Like dormcat, I'm also not pessimistic. If scanlators don't want to honor the agreement, why would they sign it in the first place? Besides we've already seen fan-translations officially recognized by 7th expansion for example. The group(s) just agrees not to distribute the game binaries and only the translation patches.

With manga, it was always problematic because the source was paper and the only way to distribute them online was to scan the whole thing in. Now with electronic format, it's possible to patches or overlays for the translations separately while the mangaka can distribute versions with blank bubbles, no-text.
