You gotta wonder sometimes if these people are aware of how the manga ended... The earlier cases have somewhat of an excuse since it was still being releases in english but now, you gotta be aware of how it ends.

Part of me wishes more kids made Death Notes instead of just blowing each others' brains out.

I personally don't know how the story ends. I just never read the mange or watched the anime.
I do however think that when many psychiatrists suggests writing angry letters and not sending them as a stress relief, writing a "Death Note" should be fine. As long as the kids understand the difference between a fictional story and reality, and they don't try to actually hurt anyone, it should be acceptable.
If these kids actually believe that the "Death Note" series is actual reality, then that's a whole other problem that should be addressed as such.

Thanks. Cool

Haha. I still find these incidents exceedingly amusing.

Also, Tatsu's comment is intriguing. Besides, even if they don't know the ending, it should be noted that if they really believe a Death Note would work..They would have to know atleast a little about the story, notably Ryuk's warning when Light first meets him. "The human who uses this note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell for eternity."

So if they actually believe it's real, then they would also be accepting that outcome, not to mention believing that Shinigamis exist.

But I say let them dream, it's true that it's better for them to try to replicate a manga rather than them becoming murderers.

Are authorities afraid it's going to work?

I would say it was just blowing off steam - were it not for the bomb plans. The death note is trivial in comparison and in itself I don't think it would mean much.

You always have to wonder about the intelligence of these kids who write their own Death Notes. It's one thing to toss off the one-liner, "I wish so-and-so was dead", and quite another to actively visualize their deaths and commit it to paper. Frankly, "deaths", plural, is always a bit scary to see someone imagine. And you can't be surprised at how these school administrators act; too many school shooters have had their own enemies lists detailing who they want to take revenge on. Even if composing your own Death Note is your form of stress relief against people who get on your nerves--which happens to everybody--I have to say, in my opinion, that resorting to murder, even imaginary and supernatural, is not a healthy way to deal with real people who you interact with.

--I should also mention that I personally believe the Death Note anime and manga are of the highest artistic order and pose intense and thoughtful questions about human [im]morality. In my opinion, the anime is with Fullmetal Alchemist one of the top 2 shows produced this decade.--

First off, just gotta say that Death Note is awesome, no questions asked. Cool

Continuing...do officials really think that Death Notes work? if they do, maybe they should do some research into the anime/manga/live-action movies. And a question for the kids that do this: do you really think the Death Note will work? Honestly, if shinigamis were real, then the world would be in for some really bad s**t.

If you believe that the Death Note world is all real, you might wanna check yourself into the nearest asylum. They'll provide you with your own padded room and a Death Note! 8D

For some reason to me this kid seems a lot worse than the others. I still think he should be able to write whatever he wants but the fact he has a "plan" of where bombs can be set up in his school makes me feel he was more serious than the others.

Theres no way possible he could make a person drink himself to death- but given how easy it is to make a bomb...I find that much worse.

I hope they give him a consoler or therapy instead of just sending him home.

Here we go again.
I would have thought that crazy died down years ago when it was first mentioned. I mean hell, that story where the book was banned in some area of China.

If people with "thoughts" like this that ruin it for legitimate creators. I say it like this because it always turns into a "scapegoat hunt". Which is why I give much credit to those that speak out against these matters just to show you that the world is not always filled with "nutjobs".

I can't deny how Death Note is one the greatest anime/manga created. However, don't these kids realize they are just mimicking someone that's fictional? I am glad people have been getting reported for this because making a list of people you'd kill is very creepy. Heck, I would create a list of people who I am so pissed at I'd want to kill. However, I know that better to act on upon those thoughts. While I do believe in justifiable homicide, Light was doing anything but that. He was a power-crazed psychopath and one of the most dark and evil anime characters I have ever seen.

The bomb plans crossed a line with me as well. I don't particularly have a problem with people making their own Death Notes, but bringing them to school and displaying them in such a manner that would attract attention is really just some pathetic cry for attention. Either that, or they're just too stupid to realize that people would have a problem with them writing their name in a notebook and a manner for them to die.

Actually, spoiler[the mangaka has already stated that Ryuk was lying about that IIRC.]

It's possible to make someone drink himself/herself to death. Now I won't say how...
