Man, all those theaters, and Eva 1.0 still can't beat Metropolis' take?! Anyone wanna throw in their two cents about why that's happened, or do y'all agree w/ John?

well considering they where they released eva leaves out about 80% of the US fans, what do they expect? I hadnt even HEARD about the movie playing until this article lol....

Good for Ponyo, glad to see a lot of non-anime fan success.

Honestly, I think people just don't know it's playing when it does. It doesn't seem to be "open" anywhere at any particular time. Instead it seems Funimation is rolling it out on a "tour," doing a city here for two days then another there for another two. For any film to play successfully it needs to play in theaters, even if it's only a few dozen, at the same time for at least a month, and it needs to be promoted. Personally, I won't be seeing it unless it actually comes to my city. I'm not going to travel any distance to see this one, especially given the cost of going to the movies these days, which may be the reason they're not getting the numbers. It's not exactly worth it to travel any distance to see it. Better to rent it on DVD.

I'd say it's to do with it being in like 80 theatres in Canada and about 10 in the US.

Seriously, the closest theatre to me playing it is 6 hours away driving.

Compare that to the Eureka 7 movie which played right here in the theatre near my university.

That the E7 movie had more screens in the US than Eva 1.0 is just terrible handling of such a big property.

Unless i'm mistaken the Eureka 7 movie was brought over by the Fathom Events company to bring it to theatres which was the same company who helped bring those Viz movies to theatres like the 1st Bleach movie, 1st Naruto movie, all 3 live action Death Noth movies, and I believe even Sword of the Stranger. So thats why Eureka 7 and those other movies had more theatres to choose from then say like the Funimation Films, and now Viz has their own special theatre.

I'm glad Ponyo did so well in America and can't wait to get it on Blu-ray.

I wanted to watch this movie but I would have to go out of my way to go watch it. The movie wasn't shown at my local theater. Some cities which have a population of 50,000 or more can't watch it because the movie wasn't showing there. If the movie is relying on word of mouth for people to go watch the movie it failed. No one wants to travel 10-100 miles just to watch a movie unless you live in a small town that doesn't have a theater. I would say its Disney fault for not showing in major cities and the lack of ads.

The Canadian screenings were one day only things across two days. Hard to pull huge numbers there. And the only reason this movie was probably even put into theatres here is because of Gainax.

My $7.50 contributed .00005% to making Ponyo the success it is!

...seriously, this didn't get more money than the bleeping Pokemon movie? That is sad.

Anybody know what the top 5 are? I'm guessing Spirited Away is #1.

Did Pokemon get released in many theaters? Considering its popularity at the time, I think it probably would have...But Ponyo did very well for what it was; it wasn't released in that many theaters, Miyazaki films don't have the popularity that they do in Japan, the TV spots/trailers honestly didn't make it look that great, and it wasn't like a Disney/Dreamworks/etc movie that everyone hears about being in production and awaits the release. So, in that respect, Ponyo did very well for an anime movie in America.

Ponyo is ranked as fifth, but I believe the top four are Pokemon 3, Pokemon 2, Pokemon 1, and the Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie (in no particular order). Spirited Away apparently made about 3.4 million.

EDIT: Whoops, not 3.4 million. Was looking at some different numbers.

The closest theater to me requires a 3 hour drive into the next state. They needed more theaters on board imo.

Here's the all-time box office list for anime films at the American box office.

Pokémon: The First Movie is still #1 with $85.75 million.
Spirited Away is #6 with $10.05 million.

$7.50 for a ticket? Wow that's really cheap compared to where I live because I think I had to spend like maybe a little over $10 to see Ponyo.

Face it, it's the usual arthouse route!

Is that a typo? I live in a city of 150,000 and it played here. It played in Monterey which has a population of 30,000. It played in several theaters in the San Francisco Bay area. So I don't understand your point. Why can't you drive 10 miles to see a movie? I drove 100 miles to see Evangelion and Naruto and I drove 20 miles to see Bleach, Sword of the Stranger, and Eureka 7. I only had to drive 5 miles to see Ponyo.
