He added that the victims' pain "must be something like the uncontrollable anger I felt when my online self was killed on the forum I spent all my time on by trolls."

He's relating victims to mass murder to someone getting trolled? This guy's pathetic. It's a good thing we're wiping his genes out of the gene pool permanently.

The incident occurred in Akihabara, the mecca of anime, where there is a high density of otaku and anime- and manga-related businesses.

I have an editorial complaint. The font switch to courier is a cute gimmick for quoting a digital source, but is used inappropriately here. Since the passage in question is not a direct quote, or even a direct translation, it should not be distinguished from the rest of the text.

It's a minor quibble, especially for a trade journalism website, but it caught my eye and I thought I would drop a note.

In this case, it is the direct translation of the entire message that was posted on a mobile phone bulletin board system.

I am deeply disturbed on how incredibly messed up this guy was. and I am angry because of how negitively his statement will reflect of the online community and otaku.

Actually it is "reportedly" what the message read. Without attributing the quote to a source, it remains hearsay.

Also, the reader is forced to assume it is a translation, since that fact is omitted from the article.

I was living in Japan, just outside of Tokyo, when this happened. It was all over the news. One of my teachers said she almost went there during the incident with her son to buy Yu-Gi-Oh cards (seriously) but they had other things to take care of that day.
I went to Akihabara a few days after it happened, and there was a small makeshift shrine set up on the street corner to honor the victims. People were still leaving flowers and offerings and taking photos and praying. It kinda brought the local community together. It was sweet in a way. Akihabara as a whole felt a bit more quiet and somber then, to be sure.

As written in the article, the sources are the police and Jiji Press. In the original article in 2008, only Jiji Press reported on the mobile phone bulletin board post. However, the prosecution confirmed the contents of the post in presenting the police evidence in the trial on Thursday.

Yet this is just an easy fix to the solution in my mind. You can't solve any issues in the gene pool by focusing on one individual, you have to dig deeper to get real results.
