It didn't play in European theaters yet? I thought it was everywhere by now.

My opinions aside, it might be because of licensing rights or some other red tape issue. The public may never know the real reason, unless stated by the company or otherwise. |

The two figures are unconnected. Ponyo opened on a different weekend, at which point Astro Boy was down to the number 10 slot. In fact it was another 2D animated film that was hurting it more than Astro Boy, namely Princess & The Frog, Ponyo had a decent number of cinemas screening it (200+ theatres), however, going by twitter chat and personal experience, it didn't get enough coverage by region and in some cases not enough screenings per day. If that wasn't the case, would that have got in the top 10? Who knows? However, Optimum normally do a good job with keeping Ghibli films in circulation in smaller cinemas in the long run, and certain chains tendancy to cycle through kids films in Saturday matinees means there'll probably be chances to catch it in the cinema long after this initial release. |

I saw a hell of a lot more advertisment for Astro Boy than I did for Ponyo so I dare say that's a large factor
|

If so, I would expect so, too. In my experience, the normal way for kids' films to get viewers is that a child sees a television ad and bugs their parents about it. Someone said, a while back, that Ponyo got a fairly good advertising campaign in the US, by the way(?) |

I saw Ponyo yesterday at the only showing they had (10:50am). There was only 1 more showing on the Sunday too.
It seriously needed more showing times... T.T |

I shall second existing observations. Public transport advertising, at least within the Capital, has been very prolific for this film. I've yet to see anything similar for Ponyo.
