OUCH!

I'm not an artist...and will never be able to be one but those look a lot alike to me.

Now, I'm going to say that perhaps Nick didn't DELIBERATLY copy Kubo-san's work (i.e. having a copy of Bleach open next to him as he drew) but it doesn't look good at all. And since, I'm guessing, Nick is just starting out in the industry...this is going to hurt him professionally for quite some time - whether he did it on purpose or not.

I care not for Bleach or Nick Simmon, but plagiarism is wrong!

And I smell publicity stunt.

When 4chan got word of this they raided Nick Simmons Deviantart page. Flooding his comment sections giving him all kinds of shit. I kept reloading and seeing the pageviews jump up and up. Last night he had about 27k pageviews now he's got over 50k.

Actually in his second post Tite Kubo says something like

"Honestly, rather than "does it look alike or not", the fact that Gene Simmons' son is a mangaka is much more on my mind"

seems he doesn't want to make such a big deal out of it or he doesn't care much about it.

THIS was more than i expected. who knows, maybe every page he made was a copy from other manga as well? what a shame to call him an artist.

I'm sure he cares...quite a bit. But, that's why publishers and lawyers exist...to handle things like this. So that the mangaka or writer can concentrate on his or her work and let someone else take care of the dirty work.

Apparently Nick was even asking for help on the project and specifically said he wanted to copy Bleach. Fail. I hope he learns a valuable lesson from all of this.

But gotta love Kubo Tite. In that second twitter post you linked, he is saying that he is more interested in the fact that Gene Simmons' son draws manga than he is about whether or not his work copied Bleach.

I don't have my manga around for a side by side comparison, but that does look an awful lot like Hellsing. At least the character design in general. But, I'm no expert.

I'm amazed at the Bleach copying though. This isn't even subtle! It's like he photocopied the pages and then just drew some details over them! Shocked

Bear in mind as a Japanese manga creator, he's probably quite used to being copied in doujinshi...

But this is shockingly blatant. There's "inspired by" and then there's "changing skin tone just a little." How can a professional (as opposed to a fan) get away with this? Well, hopefully he can't. Sue him NOW.

Damn! That was fast! Saw the post on Bleachness yesterday morning, watched the whole thing unfold and BOOM, the publishers are all over it a day later.

Also, as for ripping off other manga, there's something over on /a/ where the 4channers are going over it with a fine tooth comb. Last I saw there was some One Piece and Hellsing rip-offs as well as some fanart.

Yes, the guy traced fanart (and not even very well).
