So... about $280 million lost last year? Hmm, was there a report like this about manga in the US?

There was report that sales dropped year over year, but I don't remember the exact figure. But here the bubble had to burst eventually.

More importantly how do those numbers compare to the publishing market as a whole, which will clearly suffer due to recession.
Also it's the magazines taking the brunt, which would indicate people are prepared to wait a bit (for a finished volume) in order to save the cash. So my guess is this would be due to the current financial climate more than anything. |

The lack of big hit titles is probably hurting the Mags the most, setting easy-access raw scans aside. At least with the big titles it's worth following to be on the same page as everyone else and talk about the new swing of events. But otherwise, if there's only one or two titles you care about reading out of the bunch you might as well wait a few months to only buy that.
Everything seems to be ending lately, too. The older shonen stuff... and Nodame Cantabile, Host Club, even Glass Mask might be ending soon. And not much has risen up to take their places. Though that could just be me. But I think the US is only starting to get those new and exiting titles outside the norm. We haven't caught up to Japan yet to the point where we also have to rely on whatever new talent is found. |

WOW! You mean research actually showed that it was the recession and not web distribution of scans that caused loss? We are all so shocked! oh wait, this is actually a new concept to a lot of people...

I kinda figured it was the recession over there, especially since I heard it was pretty bad. But when recession hits, usually the first stuff to go is entertainment-related, which is what manga is.

I imagine digital distribution is less of a concern with manga than with anime. I mean, personally I don't much like reading things on my computer screen and prefer reading them in book form, whereas I often watch DVDs on my computer already, which makes the temptation for not purchasing anime far greater. Do these sales figures include manga being distributed on cell phones? I know that's been a growing trend, though I have no idea why. |

WJS's Top 3 (1P, Bleach, Naruto) is doing really well so far - the newest 1P volume even with the largest first print. Perhaps people just got bored by reading the 100th Dragon Ball rip-off!? Last WJS major hit except the Top 3 was Death Note, right? Not really shonen-like... new authors just should show more innovation instead of drawing another shonen manga that shows some boobs if the story isn't doing well.

From what I remember, Weekly Jump actually rose in circulation this year. It was one of the only magazines that rose in sales.
And shonen =/= typical action series. Gintama, a comedy that's in Jump right now is also doing really great. |

I've been noticing that too, its like a big que "I suck but still need to make money so here's some more panty shots and boobs" if its a seinen comic, there will be more rape scenes |

I can agree with that last sentence in the article, not many big hit titles. I don't if it's just me, but besides One Piece, and maybe a few manga that has been around for several years that is still continuing, there really isn't any new manga remotely interesting to me. I don't mind too much though, I'm trying to catch up with some older series, so a new series not being out right now leaves less food on my plate to eat, ya know? (Sorry for the bad expression.
 )
