ADV used to have a hentai label called "Soft Cel Pictures" which closed in 2005 -

the idea was to release the hentai crud with a name *other* than ADV on it, to differentiate it on store shelves (actually, very anime company does this; they have a sub-branch for the hentai stuff as a cover name)

Then, from 2008-2009, the ADV hentai sub-branch was "Happy Carrot"

Is "Maiden Japan" Neo-ADV's new hentai branch?

It's listed as a "new" company;

someone was able to check and find out that "Section 23" and "Aesir Holdings" were all registered in Houston; how do we check if Maiden Japan was registered there as well?

I'm interested in what the packaging will be for this Clannad season 1 complete collection. I already have all the sub only releases for both seasons.

I'm willing to "upgrade" if the packaging is better and if they fixed some of the many subtitle errors.

David Williams was over on the Anime-on-DVD forums, and said that Sentai/Section 23's new company-wide official policy (not just for Clannad) is to, yes, review the quality of the subtitles from the subs-only release when they re-release them with English dub.

So officially, you're not just buying the same subtitles all over again, yes they are going to review and correct them.

That's excellent news. It'd be even more excellent if they released the set as a thinpak. I'm really not a big fan of the 4 - 6 DVDs in 1 case setup. Any more than 2 pains me, for some reason.

@Zenerik

I know what you mean. I bought some shows recently that are on this retarded spindle with like 3-6 discs. All that does is insure you are going to break a disc sooner or later.(I went and stole a box from my friends collection that he doesn't use that fit the series and were far more safe)

Will I feel like a moron for blind buying Clannad? I'm not big on moe shows, this won't weird me out. I'm a girld so is moe aimed at me? I blind bought Avenger and it's not too great, I have heard great things about Clannad though, I'm going to save up for Slayers Evolution-R first, but I think I'll have enough money for Clannad by June.

Maiden Japan is a label of Switchblade Pictures, which also uses Section 23 for distribution. They specialize in "pink cinema" and low budget J-horror titles. It looks like Maiden Japan will be focusing on their animated equivalents.

Switchblade seems to have had some help from John Ledford getting started up, but unlike Sentai, Seraphim and Anime Network, it does seem to be a completely separate company and is headquartered in Bellaire Texas. All the executives listed on Switchblade releases are unfamiliar names and different from those on Sentai and ADV releases.

Happy Carrot is still Section 23's Hentai label, but it is said to be more difficult to license hentai than anime, so it's not a very active label.

Guess I'll have to buy the Clannad Boxset at Otakon.

Along with, hopefully, an After Story artbook.

From the news it seems to be an entirely different company, owned by different parties in Japan. So no, it's not their new hentai branch. I think their old hentai branch, "Happy Carrot" is still active. Even if it's not, I think (at least acurding to neo-ADV) this is a new company.

And yes every R1 who deals (or dealt) in hentai seems to have their own branch for it, instead of using the main name on the releases. CPM had Anime 18, Media Blastrs has Kitty Media, Rightstuf has Critical Mass, etc tec. It's just the way things have been done for a long long time. It makes a lot of sense too. They want to make it clear that this is different and seperate from their main anime.

Not really. My Clannad sub only arrived from TRSI near the end of February. I paid $24 for each set, so $48 for the whole collection. Add the $20 upgrade fee and that becomes $68. Add the $6 s&h for being in Canada and that becomes $74. And, because I"m in Canada, I have to pay a $7 C.O.D. charge on every package I get from TRSI, so now the price is $81.

If I hadn't bought the Clannad subs at all and just gotten the complete collection dub, guess how much it would have cost me? With my GotAnime card, just a fraction under $48. This upgrade is no deal for me. Crying or Very sad

It may be worth it, IMO. Depending on if they really do indeed fix the subs and what the packaging will be like.

For me, if it's just a single DVD box with 4 DVDs, it's no deal. Thinpaks all the way. Or full size DVD cases for each volume, if a thinpak isn't available.

The Clannad deal is totally worth it, but if you wanted a dub badly before you have to buy this, and you should reward these guys by getting the sub as well. I'm doing that, because it's what I said I'd do. I bought the Clannad sub before but was holding out on afterstory, with this I've got a bit more confidence in Section 23/ADV doing the right thing. This is fantastic news.

Switchblade's office is in Bellaire City? Wow! That's like less than an hour away from my hometown here in Mission Bend!

Yes Happy Carrot which got started in September 2008, is indeed still Section23's hentai label. And yes, licensing hentai is a cakewalk.
