NEWS: Final Fantasy's Yoshitaka Amano Directs 1st Film, Zan

While it's great to hear Yoshitaka Amano getting involved in animation again, I can't help but think that Zan sounds a wee bit similar to Samurai Jack in terms of story.

The panther looks cool though. Kind of like Red XIII with some sleek new body armour. Very Happy

Makes me wonder if in the future, we could Amano's studio make a Final Fantasy film that is more in line with the actual games?

I like Amano quite a bit as an artist, but I don't think that talent can translate to a good movie.

I will watch this movie anyways....

I thought The Spirits Within was in line with the overall style of storytelling that's present in the games, except for the jarring American influences that were present, but it still wasn't good. Some things are just better as part of an overall gaming experience and not as a standalone film-- and Final Fantasy is one of them.

Though, AC was pretty good...if you're a Nomura fanboy-- I admit to being one.

I believe that JP animation industry have been lagging behind on 3-D and cell shading styles. I hope it will become more mainstream and popular. There are a lot of series and scenes that can benefit from the technology but the studios are held back for developing more techniques to please their fans.

Yoshitaka Amano's Hero (1998-present):

This may be the most immature post on here, but: NERDGASM.

Amano's artistic visions being conjured up onto the big screen in 3D? It's almost too good to be true. Very Happy Needless to say, I cannot WAIT for this to come out!

Does 3D mean it's going to be in CGI? Because while I'm curious about this, I'd like it to be cel or digital 2D animation, I was so impressed by the beautiful 1001 Nights and I'd love to see another work that's brings Amano's art to life in the same way.

Hmm... I really don't want to be "that guy" or anything, but I've sort of lost faith in 3d movies directed by people who worked on Final Fantasy...

Sorry Amano. I know it's a generalization and then some but this is a pretty significant legacy...

I would hardly call this Yoshitaka Amano's first film. He also directed Bird's Song for Toei's ga-nime project, and directed one of the shorts in 10 Nights of Dreams. Not to mention his work on Angel's Egg, and Fantascope: Tylosoma.

And yes, the sounds very much like a treatment of his HERO concept, which started as an art exhibit, became an illustrated novel series (Yoshitaka Amano's HERO, likely canceled), and was adapted into a Neil Gaiman collaboration starring David Bowie called Return of the Thin White Duke (unfinished and unreleased, save for a preview in a magazine).

All of them are about a men who finds themselves in alternate realities, where they team up with a mechanical panther.

I wouldn't use Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within as an example. The movie flopped terribly considering it wasn't based off of any of the existing Final Fantasy games and really didn't appeal to the mainstream as much. I'm not saying that The Spirits Within was a bad movie, mind you. I'm just stating that a Final Fantasy movie with Amano on board that is also based on an existing title would have better appeal.
