I dunno. Let the West laugh, but I remind you that we have had our fair share of Chippendales and prettyboy bands.

Question: is the "naked" to be taken literally, or is that just another fancy-schmancy Engrish name?

It's probably Engrish.

I've heard of Japanese cars being named stuff like the Honda Life Drunk, the Daihatsu Naked, and the Suzuki Pistachio.

Suzuki pistachio?? Mmm... I'd drive that. Sounds delicious.

Not 44 at the same time though. That's too much of a sausage fest. Laughing

1) LOL! Oh, that's priceless!

2) Considering how much men and the pervs of Japan are catered to, it's about time the Ladies and Gay Men of Japan got some pandering action thrown their way.

I certainly need to forward this to a gay friend who loves Japanese male models. I know he's told me all about the Johnny's boys. This sounds pretty similar to those, though this is just one troupe. Actually, Johnny's might be the company behind this one too.

I also remember him telling me the contradiction of being more Clubs in one area of downtown Tokyo than the whole Boston area (you know, where gay marriage is legal) yet mainstream Japan is in total denial of their homosexual population. They're as bad as some of the most conservative areas of America. So just because they have this show and have a transsexual star hosting, it doesn't mean they're all that progressive.

No, this isn't a Johnny's act. Not all boy bands are under Johnny's, but there are very few that become anywhere as popular. The only recent ones that come to mind are what and w-inds.

[edit] Okay, apparently ANN has a filter. The band called "what" is actually W a T without the spaces. Come onnnn.

They've always been catered to. There's a sizable amount of doujin in Comiket devoted to yaoi and bishounen (about half last I read; used to be majority in the beginning). There's Otome Road in Ikebukuro. Maid cafes? yeah Akihabara is known for them. Butler cafes? Hardly known by outsiders. There are also significantly more host clubs in Tokyo than there are hostess clubs, etc.

While it's not a Johnny's Entertainment thing, that's certainly the audience they're vying for. Good luck with that.

Anyway, aside from a couple stand-outs (hello, Choi Si Won), I couldn't even keep the 13 members of Korea's Super Junior straight; I'd have no hope with 44.

How can they be a "Male AKB48" if they only have 44 members...? All joking aside, I have to say I'm more creeped out than incited. :/

There's going to be horror stories of child molestation in a few years time.

Also, how the hell does anyone other than the label and managers eat off of a group like this? A 44-way royalty split is ridiculous. Even for the label, having to make sure that 44 people are clothed and fed is a pretty big ordeal and expense.
