It sucks so hard to see all these huge libraries of streaming anime, but to have satellite internet. I don't even know why I opened this article, I knew it'd just depress me. I could save so much money on DVDs if I didn't live in the boonies.

Forgive my technical ignorance here, but what does the fact that you have satellite internet have to do with not being able to stream? Is it just because the speed is too slow to have "smooth" viewing?

Since satellite internet is expensive to run due to all the equipment and the fact that not a lot of people use it (people who live in boonies and don't want dial-up), having unlimited bandwidth would cause these companies to hemorrhage money. So what they do is they manage our bandwidth consumption by capping it at a certain amount depending on what service you have. If you go over that limit they punish you by decreasing your speed to that slower than dial-up (not an exaggeration). Of course I could always avoid this buy downloading in the designated unlimited time, which is between the hours of 2am and 7am. The way I understand it is that they do all this in the sake of "fairness" so that one user doesn't become a bandwidth hog, thus creating problems for them and everyone else; they actually call it the Fair Access Policy, or FAP as I and many other users like to call it.

I personally have the "Elite" plan which gets me a maximum download/upload of speed of a blazing 2Mbps (never even comes close to that; max is about 185Kbps) and a whopping 500 megabytes of bandwidth every 24 hours. All this for the super cheap and very reasonable price of $120 per month. That doesn't even include the awesome $400 satellite they force us to buy and installation fees for said satellite. Basically they know that our only options are them or dial-up, and they use it to their advantage.

So now that you have a good understanding of the bullshit I'm working with here, let me answer your question and tell you why I can't stream: The average size for an episode of anime on youtube (so mediocre quality) is about 185Mb, or 37% of my entire allowed bandwidth. So I could get off, at most, 2 episodes every 25 hours (an extra hour is added since I have to do it after 24 hours). So including things like surfing the web, watching random videos on youtube, upgrading software and other things I have to leave breathing room for, it just wouldn't be smart of me to use up 74% of my alloted space on two episodes of anime. Also, I never watch only two episodes at a time, so it screws with the way I actually watch anime. At the end of the day, it's easier for me to just buy DVDs. THIS is why I blind buy all the time. THIS is why I spend so much time bargain hunting. THIS is why I don't have subscription to Crunchyroll or The Anime Network. THIS IS WHY I HAVE TO WAKE UP AT 6 IN THE F*CKING MORNING TO WATCH PANTY AND STOCKING AND NOW OREIMO!

So, Blood-, there you go.

Damn, that's a shame. You're not that far from Harrisonburg are you? I assume they have decent access due to the college.

I keep forgetting how quickly you get into the boonies in this part of Virginia. A couple of miles out of town and its almost wilderness. It is much the same here. An hour out of town and thats where I am, an hour from town. Well, Lynchburg actually, but who would want to.

Dude, you don't even need to go to Harrisonburg. The people who live a mile away have Comcast. Unfortunately, I live around a bunch of old fogeys (no offense) who don't want to adapt this new-fangled broadband mumbojumbo, so Comcast can't come down this way. Well, actually they can, but it'd cost us $65,000 dollars since they'd have to run all kinds of wires down this way just for us.

Would that mile be line of site by any chance (at least with the help of a tall pole)?

^ Thats what I was wondering. You could get a long range wifi antenna if there are any hotspots in that area, of even better if you have a friend with cable that lives that close have him get a long range wifi adapter and you get a long range wifi antenna and share the connection, that is as long as you secure it well and you can talk a friend into sharing bandwith (I would think you could pay half the bill or something to make up for it.) Depending on the equipment used this can travel distances of 3-10 miles (with line of sight.) You can also make something to increase the Db gain too if you dont want to buy all the specialized equipment. Look up long range wifi on wikipedia and it talks about them.

I looked it up and it was looking good until I got to this part:
Quote:
Obstacles are among the biggest problems when setting up a long-range Wi-Fi. Trees and forests degrade the microwave signal, and rolling hills make it difficult to establish line-of-sight propagation.

There are trees all around me and the terrain is extremely uneven and hilly. Trees and hills are actually the reason I can't see the nearest house with comcast from my second floor.

I don't know. I think it's a lost cause until someone decides to muscle in on satellites territory. At least it's winter and daylight savings, making it easier to wake up early since I go to sleep early.

Get a laptop with a wireless connection and go to Starbucks or Barnes & Noble. Buy a coffee and watch a show.
