Love this show; one of my underrated favorites. It's light and it's not realistic, and you'll find 1000 flaws in it, but at the end of the day, it's a solid show that more than accomplishes what it sets out to do.

Also has one of my favorite scores of any anime.

Even after several years, Kaleido Star still forms my trinity of favorite anime shows with Cardcaptor Sakura and Fumoffu.

Definitely my top 15 material. I like to put this show on the same boat as Hajime no Ippo, Hikaru no Go, Kenichi etc. They all have the same vibe in them. Yeah, they may all be awfully naive shows, but that is also where their charm lies. Anime also has hard time creating good female driven shows so this gets a special mention for that.

The second season also managed to pull it off without dropping the ball, although it went a bit overboard with the training sequences. Man does this show have the harshest training episodes I've ever seen.

A good review.

ANN has been taking another look at a lot of my favorites lately. Kaleido Star, or season one at least, is one of those series that I always look back on as being at the very core of my anime experience. It had an incredible magic for me.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid to say that season two did not recapture that magic. It was not directed by Mr. Sato, and it shows. Also, the harshness of the emotional abuse that Sora endures is magnitudes greater. As the review says, the first season was able to successfully mitigate those elements, but the second season is raw ugly conflict, to the point that I felt it went irrevocably over the line.

Thankfully, I watched the two seasons a fair length of time apart, and my reaction to the second season has in no way diminished my appreciation of the first, which remains one of my most treasured series.

Personally, I actually prefer the second season by inch. More conflict is a good thing in my books and only adds to the awesomeness of Sora. It may be brutal, but the achievement is well worth it.

I watched the first episode a few months ago and really enjoyed it a lot. I'm going after the singles of Season 1 and S2 instead of getting this.

This series is one of my favorites, and getting more exposure is one of the best things about Funimation grabbing it. I watched the DVDs of a friend for the first time, now I know soon I'm gonna get myself these two re-releases. The best part is the second set will include that amazing OVA too!

He might as well be slapping Hideaki Anno upside the head.

Points for this epic statement.

Cynthia Martinez doesn't project the depth and complexity of emotion that Ryou Hirohashi does

Maybe not, but it still fit when I watched it, and I give her big credit for one thing (among others). I love dubs when done well, but even in great dubs there is often one weakness--the crying. The crying almost never sounds sufficiently convincing. Listening to Cynthia cry as Sora, especially at the end, was the first time I didn't half-cringe.

This is a great, gorgeous show, the kind of which I can easily sit down, watch, and be hooked from the start to the finish, and genuinely root and cheer for the main hero. This and Aria would be the kind of series that could serve as respites for those who have otherwise cynical attitudes to things during the day.

Man, it really stinks that I did not care for the second season of this show because otherwise it would have been one of my favorites.

Good review though.

i liked this show and really wish i could get this to complete my collection, but sadly i already have the first 4 volumes. it'd be different if it was one or two, but unless i get some amazing discount then i'm just gonna have to deal w/ not having the last few episodes in my collection.

but if they re-release the second season it's a buy for me!

i loved cynthia in this role Very Happy

I just bought the second season of Kaleido Star at RightStuf for $20 here.

Anyway, last month or so I watched all of the first season one of Kaleido Star. After it got through the first 5-6 episodes or so I really started to enjoy it. By the time they were doing Arabian Nights I pretty much loved it.

Sato did direct the second season too. It's a joint credit with Yoshimasa Hiraike, but he was heavily involved in the series from the start as well (credited as Assistant Director in the first series).

Interesting. I'd be eager to find out exactly how that interaction played out, because to me the second season was completely different in its tone and focus. Thanks for the clarification, in any case.
