Good timing on the review, I just marathoned this series over the weekend. I would agree the series is nothing exceptional but I'm glad I have it on my shelf with all the laugh out loud moments that I kept finding myself surprised by. It doesn't hurt that I am a cat owner as well and I think anyone who is, or who knows cats and their behaviors, will find a little something extra to smile at as well. The humor ended up being much more effective than the harem shtick throughout it for me. I could see myself re-watching it at some point for all the silliness in it.

It's not a series that makes me want to run out and buy it right away. It was a good show and the review nails it.

The Cat Mode elements do help, especially the goofy training sequence and the way the cat's voice and attitude change in the before/after contrast, but even with them this series is nowhere near as funny or sexy as, say, To Love-Ru.

Ironically, calling this lower than that show just makes me cringe that something lower can exist.
To Love-Ru was... a real piece of crap. The first half did a good job of introducing it's characters, and was decently funny, and had some pockets Shocked when it came to fanservice... but...

The other half was so... freakin' asinine!!! It wasn't funny, sexy, or interesting.
To Love-Ru holds the honor of being one of the most disappointing series I've seen.

Which pretty much means, that I won't watch this one. No offense, Lala fans!

Yep, another bang on Theron review as far as I'm concerned. I'm starting to think the guy peers into my brain before he writes his stuff.

Well I find to love ru interesting even though i have never seen it before. Also cause of it's main pluses as well as it being a harem title, sure it's no love hina , but it's a preety decent one for the harem genere.

since i am a mega junkie for fanservice and harem series, i'd be willing to get it.

BUT if it's anything like shuffle or like any of the Tenchi series , I'm definitely gonna get it, ( After the next DVD release will be included with an english dub)

Decent... yeah, but that's not enough for it to work for those who dislike harem.
I agree with you about Love Hina though. I still think it's one of the best harems(and that even includes the Key series) strictly because it has one of the best harem boy leads anime, has a nice rounded cast of girls(Naru in small doses too), and, even though the anime isn't the most... fulfilling, it's just a good feel-good exp.

I haven't seen the Tenchi series, but I did enjoy Shuffle! for it's shift in tone, it's actual ending, ....basically it's 4th quarter did what most harems hardly ever do.
And the ride to that section wasn't painful so that's a plus.

In comparison to ALL that, To Love-Ru just... loses. I dunno...

Like many of their other recent releases, though, it does have some on-screen explanatory notes as they come up in the episode.

Thanks for adding this because I'm not a fan of this when there's no option to turn them off. I truly wish these companies would put information like this as an "extra", rather than on screen, annoyingly in the way.

As for the review, good to see I didn't waste my money on a mediocre offering. I'm still interested, but now the wind's been removed from the sails and I can breathe a little easier on holding off.

@Blood-:
I agree, but this is the reason I'd never wear a tinfoil hat. Key has saved me big money as well as made purchases well worth the cost a bit more than my $30 usual limit. Still enjoying Spice & Wolf, as just one example.

Key had better never, ever turn in his resignation. There would be blood.

Hey! See what I did there! Razz

Eh, I remember when this first came out through fansubs. I saw it during my Anime Club run-through, and I got to say that this show was just like all the other harems - fanservice moments mixed in with girls falling over one guy. This show does try to be original in it's own way, but it's nothing special. Nothing special at all...

To me To Love-Ru was a version of Urusei Yatsura, except that I actually liked all the characters. Part of the charm of Urusei Yatsura was that ALL of the characters were tools, and you enjoyed watching the misfortune unfold, punctuated by brief glimpses of trueness.

I found it hard to hate any char in To Love Ru, and I will admit that the character designer (manga artist) knocked it out of the park in regards to what buttons to push with me. For a fanservice title done right I always point to To Love Ru.

Which brings me to Nyan Koi, I think this review has pushed it towards purchase for me. I have certaninly bought worse and on sale, not a bad shot to take in my book, but that is me, and I am a cat person.

Then I highly suggest killing your brain cells with UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie, if only for the catgirl-centric episodes. Oh, and Tanaka Rie, who is just generally awesome.

I thought To-Love Ru was fun initially but very mediocre overall and Nyan Koi was much better, particularly story wise. I also prefer the artwork and character designs on Nyan Koi. So I would say for those who may use To-Love Ru as a benchmark for comparison -- don't. The whole show is very different to begin with

Although this does result in some amusing scenes where cats comment on Jyunpei's relationship foibles, it also often makes for an awkward balance, with the two main aspects distinct enough from each other that the series alternates between Harem Mode and Cat Mode. A more effective route would have been to smoothly integrate the two elements, but that would have required some actual effort on the part of the series' writing and composition and neither seems inclined to give that here.

I think mixing the two might've forced the, in my opinion, tedious 'staying one step ahead of getting discovered' angle. If I remember correctly they did start to engage in it towards the end. They set the bar kinda high with the 'grant 100 wishes'. Maybe they hedged on saving that card til later, but the uncertainty of a 2nd season forced their hand.

when I first saw to love ru, the first thing that came to mind was urusei yatsura, the show was almost a copy of it. you have an alien girl, and a boy who likes someone else, the alien girl misunderstands human boy, and thinks he proposes to her, but instead of getting shocked by lum, lala has crazy gadgets that always go wrong, and he gets hurt,

I loved the drawing of tu love ru, lala kinda reminds me of moka from rosario vampire, but I dont see tu love ru going for as long as urusei yatsura, and for the record, I own the entire set of urusei yatsura. even the movie released bu CPM, I believe that is around a 62 volume set.

but back on topic....

I liked nyann koi, though I feel it was a bit rushed, and could have been made to a 25 episodes series, but that is just me, and my main problem with all these newer shows, is that there are no blu-ray releases, nyan koi had a blu-ray release in japan, but not here, funi is doing that with sacred blacksmith and rideback, kinda sucks, I want to start buying more blu-ray for my anime collection, but the companies are not giving me that, instead, funi is upscaling chobits for blu-ray, don't get me wrong, it the upscale is good, I will be buying it.....

they even released rosario vampire in an upscaled blu-ray release in japan, so come on funi, if you think sekerie sold well, just wait till you see how many fans of rosario vampire there are.

I also compared To Love-Ru's premise to Urusei Yatsura when I reviewed the first half of the series; in fact, I'm convinced that the creators basically said, "what would we get if we made a sexier, harem version of UY?" And you're right, TLR won't run as long as UY, but by the end of this month it will have released its 44th episode, and that's an incredibly high level of durability for a pure harem series. Nyan Koi will not achieve that.

And funny fact - comparation to To Love Ru - which I found less funnier, and its fanservis rather annoying then sexy. (Manga was on the border, but anime cross the line of fanservice)
Nyan Koi! is "OK", I like the balance between harem and comedy, yes, it doesn't go to the extremes like other shows it this genre, fact which I'm gratefully for. Maybe I'm too old for these new shows and I want something just "OK".
And I want second season, too ~_^
