do we really need a remake? The original manga was amazing and very well done. Unless this is going to be more realistic but even then i do not see the point.

Huh. A kid in my Language Arts class was talking about this book a few weeks ago. He said it was really good...I immediately recommended The Hunger Games to him after he described it and thought about looking for it. Now I'm gonna have to.
...Debating...do I tell him about this or not? o_O I might get another "Wait, you like anime?" look again~ |

Well, I expect it to at least be better than Hitoshi Tomizawa's involvement in Takami's Blitz Royale. That was a total trainwreck if you ask me. The one thing I immediately thought of when I read this was: Will Keith Giffen do the translation?

Oh, god, I really hope they will keep the moron Keithy far away from this.
I really, really anticipate this. I wonder if it's a prequel with the Battle Royale characters, or a sequel with a new class, or a totally unrelated spin-off story set in the same universe. The BR manga is still my favorite manga. I wonder what Mioko Onishi's art style looks like? |

It had some interesting ideas, but choosing Hitoshi for the artist was a big mistake. Can't have a cast of 30 something characters who all wear the same clothes and all have sameface.
Generic looking shonen from what I've seen but I'd imagine he/she will probably change their style for this manga. |

Well, I dunno how interested I am in another manga. All depends how much new material is in it guess. The artworks too, I guess.
Meanwhile, I'm scratching my head. How is this not at least somewhat of a ripoff? Hell, even Steven King in his review said it tread on the same ground. (He also mentions earlier work The Running Man by some guy name Bachman.  ) So when i see kids talking about this and thinking it's so new and edgy due to the violence and topic, I have to laugh at them. I'm sorry, where were you almost ten years ago when Battle Royale was all the buzz among Japanophiles and fans of violent films and books. Hell, the thing was nearly black listed because of Colombine and you pretty much had to get a bootleg. Hell, you still do. Luckily Viz published the book and TokyoPop the manga adaptation.
At the same time it's nice to see we've got a current teen book that still has that Lord of the Flies type of violence in this post Columbine atmosphere. I just hope the book itself is decent. I hope it can it can live up to Battle Royale, the precursor in this sub-genre of teen books. Comparably, Twilight is a complete let down from its precursor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer from my time or even Anne Rice novels from a little before that. |

The Hunger Games is the poor man's Battle Royale. Not only does it feel like a bad ripoff in places (there are several things that are almost exactly the same), there's none of the moral conflict that made Battle Royale so interesting in the first place.
The deus ex machina in Hunger Games for the sake of eliminating moral dilemnas was ridiculous. Plus the random romance thrown on seemed tacked on at best. Granted I only read the first one and gave up, I don't know if it improves at all. To actually stay on topic, I'm interested in how it turns out. The first Battle Royale manga was okay (over the top and ridiculous and creepily sexual...why do most of these these 15 year olds look like 30 year olds? But a fun read none-the-less and kept me glued to it just to see what happened in the end). 'Battle Royal II Blitz Royal' was apalling, and had horrendous art, so I'm hoping it's at least better than that. |

Wow... this is the first I've heard of "The Hunger Games", but that is such a farking rip-off of Battle Royale that I literally laughed when I read this. The only thing different is that instead of having an entire class chosen, the government chooses only one boy and girl at a time (why always one boy and girl, is this some sort of gender supremacy book?). Wow. That's terrible. Anyways, what made Battle Royale (the novel) awesome, or at least one of the reason, was how it showed how some friendships in primary education are merely for looks and nothing else. It also showed some of the carnal nature in the more violent kids. I love the novel, so I hope this spinoff is good. Not really a fan of the manga personally though. |
