Shipping a single version cuts down on Funimation's costs, meaning the price really shouldn't got up. I hope this becomes the norm.

The article should mention that there isn't going to be a price increase. The combo for Eden of the East is still $35 and GRZ is still $60 for the RE and $65 for the LE.
As I said in the thread in the Retail section, if this allows Funimation to release more shows (ie every show) on BD, I don't care what they do with the packaging, the cover art, or the case size. Besides, there is no downside to this anyways, at least not one I can think of. |

I've found that I like buying movies in the DVD/Blu-ray combo packs, and I think I'd like something like that for anime too, if they were to release it.
As it stands right now, I'm not entirely sold on Blu-ray as something that will come to be as universally adopted as DVD. DVD is still the universal standard in physical video media, and Blu-ray still has a lot of market penetration to go before I feel it's okay to start buying things in Blu-ray only format and stop buying DVDs that I know will work in every disc player I own (and the disc players of any friends I might want to loan something to). A disc that I can ONLY play on my television has less value to me than one I can play anywhere, even if the quality of its video/audio is significantly higher. That's why I like those combo-packs - I don't have to choose between DVD and Blu-ray formats. The advantage to the company is that you only have to produce one SKU for stores, making it easier to manage inventory. The downside is that it costs more to author a Blu-ray disc, and customers are footing a bill that's roughly the cost of a Blu-ray + a couple extra bucks for the DVD version (the ones that throw in a "digital copy" make me laugh a little, because if you bought the disc, you already have the right to make/own a digital copy for your personal use). It's already harder than it should be to navigate the world of anime Blu-rays, trying to figure out what's natively HD, what's actually 1080p, what's "HD but a crappy transfer", or what's just an upscale on a Blu-ray - it's like a minefield. So where I'm interested in buying, say, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, even if I want really nice picture/sound, it's difficult to convince myself to spring for the Blu-ray version (which seems like it's often being sold for cheaper than the DVDs, for whatever reason). At the same time, companies are seeing that anime buyers' prime mover is "low cost," and they're responding in kind with inexpensive boxsets - which is great, but lately, that's ended up meaning that 13 episodes of a series get splayed across a measly two DVD discs, and when the compression needs to be high enough to fit that many episodes on a disc, the gap in quality between DVD and Blu-ray becomes even wider. That's why I'd like to see combo packs make their way to anime. I think these releases will be exceptions rather than the rule (or that this will be something it's only feasible to do with theatrical films, not series), but having the budget DVD version that plays on everything (but is compressed onto few enough discs that the video might suffer a bit) along with the Blu-ray (which may or may not be true HD) cuts out some of the guesswork there. Not that I mind research, but it'd be nice to not have to research things like "is this anime Blu-ray an upscale?" This may be an idea that only looks good to a mind tainted by conservative, cover-all-your-bases collector-ism, though, since it'd cost more per set to make, and I don't see Funimation wanting to eat any expenses they can get away with not having to. Considering the dvds were originally the same price as the bluray, and a lot of places have sales on blurays rather than dvds, I'd consider it as just getting two for the price of one, one of which being of better quality.

I find this EXTREMELY interesting. I was wondering how long it would take the anime industry to try the combo packs. Kinda makes me a bit more interested in Ga Rei Zero.

I was almost positive Lance or maybe Adam said just a few months ago that they would never do a combo pack since DVDs and BDs were selling fine separately and warranted no such change... crazy has business plans change so quickly.
Combo packs are decent for movies are short series, but there is no way in hell they'll do this for full on 24/26 episode series or even 13-ep multi-part sets. The combos are a plus for those who still only have DVD players... but for people like me who have BD players, the DVD just sits there and gets absolutely no use ~_~ I don't see this lasting long - these two series will definitely be a trial. |

Actually, I've found quite the opposite. I have a blu-ray player. Most of my friends don't. My mother-in-law doesn't. The extra DVD means I can actually play the movie elsewhere and even lend out a copy I won't miss since I can still play the blu-ray at home. |

No... I think you're wrong there... partly. Blu ray hit critical mass this past year.. Well on track with what DVD did at this point in its lifetime. DVD is on its way out as the standard pre-recorded medium for new movies at the very least but will still be around as a viable recording medium since it's both cheaper and not completely disallowed as such by home entertainment companies. It may be that Blu ray will NOT catch on widely as a recording media mostly because the entertainment business has done its best to keep standalone BD recorders off the market thus far (they've been available in Japan for years but may still only record at 720p; not up on the latest Japanese developments there -- they could have 1080p recorders for all I know now). The day that optical formats become obsolete like VHS, laserdisc, and VideoCD have will be sad. Right now that still looks at least 10-15 years away and it may still turn out that the 5-inch disc format surprises people with further storage increases than what's see in research labs now. I doubt we'll see such careful treatment of movie delivery online. You can bet almost all the extras expected in deluxe movie discs will go the way of the dodo if streaming becomes the norm. There just is not enough available bandwith to stream a Hi-Def films now with all the gravy that's standard with optical disc media; it's a fool's game predicting that bandwidth will catch up for this any time soon or that even if it does that multimedia companies won't cut out extra features for streaming delivery to save money. As it is, most computer screens in homes aren't that big and are hardly optimal for movie watching. Maybe computers will merge further with TV sets than they already have, maybe they won't but entertainment center PC units haven't exactly flown off the shelves, either. This is a future most hardcore movie fans are not looking forward to and recent sentiments expressed by some movie directors at the last CES expo show that they're in agreement with those fans, too. |
