Glad to see Sato on the list, what he did with the Aria series was phenomenal.

Yeah. But on the other hand his body of work is relatively small in comparison, and you can argue that he only really "broke out" not too long ago.

I wonder what the criteria was for this list though. It's actually kind of refreshing to NOT see Miyazaki on such a list

His body of work is bigger than Yamakans at the very least

I'm pretty sure this list is TV series directors anyway

It's not suprising Miyazaki is not on the list, whether or not it's exclusive to TV shows. Dengeki caters more to the otaku crowd, not the mainstream appeal that has made Miyazaki a household name.

Not suprised to see Junichi Sato on the list, I'd expect him to be in the top 3 though, but out of all those directors he's probably been in the top 10 the longest.

I concur, I like Miyazaki's films but it's nice to see others besides him on the list.

And my inner Bee Train/Mashimo fanboy is going WOOOHOOO to see Mashimo on the list. Not sure the order if 1 is the best or 10 is the best if it is 1 then I'm beyond shocked to see him beat out Kamiyama Only really seen Eden of the East (partly been waiting for the chance to see the R1 and I liked what I saw). Well of course if it's the other way around and 10 is the most favorite then also surprised he's that high up on the list. *end ramble.*

Either way well done to the directors to make this, with dozens of shows getting made each year standing out is important.

He, he, he, awesome! The director of Big Windup is a #1 favorite! Though considering what Past said about how these Dengeki surveys cater towards the otaku crowd, I'm honestly surprised since I can't seem to recognize any show on Tsutomu Mizushima's history that is otaku-oriented, not directing-wise anyway.

As previously said, it looks like this list was primarily for TV series directors. There is a little cross over if you look at each bio, but most of these guys seem to have mostly TV credits to them

I always thought Hiroshi Nishikiori was one of the most underappreciated anime directors out there - I love I'm Gonna Be an Angel, Azumanga Daioh, The Melody of Oblivion and many others shows he did - so it's nice to see him get some fan recognition, even though I'm not a fan of his current series (which I blame on the source material).

Kenji Kamiyama would rank way higher on my personal top 10, though. In my opinion, he directed four of the best shows of the past decade.

The original survey does not specify or state that it is primarily for television series directors. As Hypeathon noted, the survey simply reflects the interests of (self-selected) Dengeki readers, which are not necessarily the same as other groups of anime fans.

I have a feeling he was voted purely for Azumanga Daioh and Toaru Majutsu no Index.

Most of these directors have recently put out works (or have directed landmark properties in the past - i.e. Nadesico, Noir) that resonated strongly with hardcore male otaku - hence, the inclusion of people like Yamamoto (Lucky Star) and Nishikiori, who don't necessarily have a long list of commercial or critical hits yet.

This is also why you won't see Takahiro Omori or Ken'ichi Kasai on one of these polls.

There's that recent phenomenon, Ika Musume.....
