Earlier today I caught the second half of this week's episode of the Japanese music show J-MELO on NHK WORLD TV, hosted by singer May J, with special commentator Dave Spector.

According to J-MELO, the Top 10 Singles in Japan for the Year 2010 consisted entirely of songs by only two musical acts, the female idol group AKB48 and the boy band ARASHI.

AKB48's "Beginner" took the No. 1 spot.

Note the word "Singles." Singles are released every few months, so I'm not surprised. If it was albums, then yeah something is probably wrong and if you count AKB48's multiple teams that release various singles occasionally, all the more reason.

It's true.
The majority of that list is AKB48 related or a boyband.

Looking at the list, the only way this gets any credence at all is if Arashi works similarly to AKB48, and even then, that's a pretty weak argument.

It's a sign that somebody in the industry is doing it wrong, and it's probably more than one somebody.

First, what a weird thing to see J-MELO and someone post as Joe Mello.

This isn't pathetic at all. If anything, it represents the music industry as well as any sales chart can. No matter the country, the information presented fits for most.

Teenagers have always been the largest influence of music sales charts, and will continue to be long while most of you are screaming at others about lawn care.

Those 60year old males need to pick it up here - they aren't buying any OP/ED songs from their favorite anime.....

It would be interesting to see how this compares to the general CD purchases. I suspect the trend would be much the same. Teens and young adults tend to buy most of the music, mostly because that's what's made available.

Also, this chart doesn't take into account those who are buying the stuff as gifts. This would be particularly true of those old enough to be parents and grandparents.

Or else, its effective marketing by AKB48 in generating singles sales.

Given the structure of AKB48, effectively multiple manufactured girls bands under one brand name, its no surprise that it dominates single sales. And the most popular boy band taking the rest of the spots is extremely unsurprising for single charts as well.
