Wow, okay, I've read a lot that Tim Ervin has edited. Layoffs suck. Sad

Damn. I believe it was Tim Ervin who I meet a number of years ago at a Dark Horse manga panel at Otakon. I was just getting into more manga at the time, mainly Berserk and the forthcoming Hellsing which he was talking about. Though I had gotten into manga with their Lone Wolf and Cub, I think the first actual manga I read. He's been involved in some fantastic titles over the years and Dark Horse is simply one of the best American publishers for manga, certainly for the titles I'm into. The only one that may come close is Viz's Signature lines, but that's cheating since they have Japanese publishers are parent companies. That's rather shocking that someone who's done as well and as acclaimed as Dark Horse is cutting editors.

Sorry to hear this. Ironically, I've just ordered Berserk 20 thru 34 because of TRSI's Dark Horse sale. I wonder what impact, if any, these layoffs will have on DH's manga lines in the future.

I think Dark Horse, like a great deal of publishers, is just going through changes to coincide with the economic climate as well as changes in the manga market in the United States from a sales perspective. Most people assumed the sales were relatively okay, but you have to count piracy and a host of other factors for affecting the bottom line. The editors were amazing for their efforts over the years, but I guess Dark Horse couldn't continue to bear the expense.

We have to remember that Dark Horse is one of the biggest independent publishers and has a unique manga lineup, but it's small in comparison to the established big two comic book publishers and the known manga publishers such as Viz. All in all, Dark Horse, and its employees, live or die off the sales.

Dark Horse Comics had about 100 employees before Tuesday.

I didn't realized Dark Horse was such a small company, or is that just their manga branch?

That's comics/manga/everything. 100 employees is quite a large staff for a comics company that isn't DC or Marvel.

DH's manga lines will remain unaffected.

As to the question of the number of employees working DH manga, there are two, full-time. A handful of editors might have a manga project here or there.

100 is huge.

Tokyopop only has 6 staff members. And it used to have 200 at one point.

It's very sad for those 7 employees, but laying off 7 employees isn't as bad as 194 over the course of a few short years.

That sucks to hear, especially given our chronically ill economy (or is it...? dundundun! Shocked ). Dark Horse has put out some seriously well-done localizations, so I have to give them props on their manga section's work. Best of wishes wherever they go.

This doesn't bode well. As someone whose dream it is to be a comic/manga editor, and who was looking to DH as a potential career prospect, I am sad for the company and for the future of the US manga industry.
