Note to Americans, you can watch one piece for free, there is no need to illegal download them.

Does this mean that Funimation did get money from "some" of the illegal downloaders?

I seriously doubt it. From the other reports I read about this case and on him. Either way, it's not really gonna stop anything.

probably. but not much. My friend got catch downloading/sharing music during the college day. he only paid $500 something to settle it with the music companies. I think they always offer settlement before they take you to court. Or you could be this woman.

I just don't get why people, especially in the US, still download when Funimation lets them have it for free. I used to watch/download alot of fansubs but gradually stopped since Funimation now allows Canadians to watch their shows on their site without the Hulu block. I was so happy when they made that announcement because I can then continue to watch One Piece legally when I run out of the DVDs I purchased. I just wish they would do online streaming for Detective Conan (I admit that I still watch Fansubs for that show only because there is no other way).

I was also able to watch Princess Jellyfish legally and it was worth the wait. Very Happy

I think while some people might make the whole I LIKE MY SHINY KARAOKE FANSUBS excuse, I don't think that a preference for fansubs is the issue here (and streams are generally SO much more convenient than torrenting.) I would venture to say that these people might not KNOW about the legal streams... I watch Crunchyroll, but I had no clue that Funi was streaming One Piece. I see CR ads on a bunch of other anime sites, but the only time I ever hear about Funi streams is in headlines on AnimeNewsNetwork. One Piece fans might be a little more casual, so if they're just used to going to their torrent site every week to get the latest eps, they might not be glued to the front page of ANN to even know that Funi is streaming it.

Unlike Crunchyroll, Funimation actually seems to have quite some money for advertising (just look at this site!), so I don't know why they don't advertise their streams much more... I guess I avoid Funi streams because they're also more of a hassle than CR (even though Funi usually has better shows...)

Ars Technica had a rather nice little article about anime piracy and Crunchyroll a few days ago (and the first paragraph is all about Mr. Evan Stone). The guys interviewed from Crunchroll bring up a lot of good points about how anime piracy is really a result of market failure and is best attacked with market solutions. In the long run, the Crunchyroll method is going to put an end to more anime piracy than any number of Funimation lawsuits. As quoted in the articule, Mr. Kun Gao says piracy on the shows Crunchyroll licenses drops 60-70%, and I can believe this number. I've seen the evidence myself.

In other words, while Funi is perfectly justified for suing downloaders, there are better and more cost efficient ways to battle piracy.

Obviously it is because the fansubers (really many should be called "rippers" at this point since they're just taking the same the same streams the legal sites use) are better because they aren't part of the industry or official system! It's kind of like how everyone knows that drugs bought through shady internet sites importing from other countries are better than those gotten from a pharmacy or how chemically produced formula is better than natural breast milk for babies. It's all about sticking it to "the man" whomever that happens to be.

Rember, you're a rebel and an outsider just like everyone else!

No, really, I think this is more or less the mindset of a disturbingly large portion of fandom. They think Funi is some kind of evil entity because they actually make money. For some reason quite a few people ignore the money the subbers and rippers are making. Look at the aggregator sites getting more hits than legit sites and topping search listings. It is messed up.

Also that is a REALLY low settlement. Being the son of a lawyer and studying to become one myself, I can tell you that most of that money if not all of it is going to the filing/court costs and the lawyer. I'd want at least $5,000. They could actually amount to something.

I remember once downloading Funimation rip and then immediately screaming and deleting the file, because of it's horrendous quality. Is it always like a 360p and with Funimation logo? Then, thank you very much, I'd wait for perfect fansub even if I would live in the US )

Well said. Legal issues aside, why waste hard-drive space and bandwidth downloading something you can stream for free? Some people are just plain dumb.

Well, there is your problem right there. It was ripped so of course the quality is going to be terrible. Razz

And ya, they have to have the watermark on the vids.

Even so, they should not be covering up half of the screen on the bottom, especially for a video in 360p. Haven't seen Funimation's streams in a few seasons since they've been behind and picking up crap titles lately so I don't know if this has changed recently. Not to mention that if they really want to, they need to start upping it to 720p if they haven't like what CrunchyRoll has been doing.

In all honesty, I can see CrunchyRoll eventually overtaking Funimation in the simulcast business if it hasn't done so already. In the long run, CrunchyRoll could even beat out Funimation in a retail business simply because of better quality. While it doesn't exactly have a marketing team like Funimation does, I'm sure they could pull a set of staff to eventually do so. Plus, it seems that they have better connections with Japanese companies too.

Yeah, a free 360p pixelated POS. Or, you could get the 720p fansub with crystal clear video. Hard choice, no?

the last time I tried to watch a One Piece episode on FUNimation's website, an advertisement commercial would interrupt the episode like every 5 minutes, and that gets very annoying. I want to watch an episode with no interruptions. Exclamation
