Monkey! I reckon any British viewer of a certain age is more familiar with that than anything else. It was brilliant!
The theme song (Born from an egg on a mountain top...) did feature in one of the end credit karaoke sequences of "Lucky Star". |

Since I've long grown up and beyond Dragon Ball, I almost feel slightly ashamed that the only thing mentioned that I've seen and enjoyed is the manga version of Gensomaden Saiyuki (get well soon, Ms. Minekura! And someone please pick up the rest of it!)
I really need to see Alakazam, especially after Mike's video review awhile back. I'm always up for some trashy Kawajiri fun, so I'll add Goku: Midnight Eye to the list too! Oh, and I remember Monkey Magic! That was one of those shows that would air on early Sunday mornings that know one but me paid attention to! |

Oh yes, Saiyuki. I do like that show (and not just because of the bishonen, I swear!). Because, I did realize that it is a loose adaptation of the original Journey to the West. So, that peaked my interest first; the hot anime guys just added to the package.
Mike, thanks for the recommendation for an english adaptation. I'll be adding Monkey to my reading list. The only anime I can think of that pays homage to Goku and his band, is Read or Die OVA. At one point Yomiko has to fight Sanzo, who possesses Goku's staff, and Cho Hakkai's fire. I thought that was a nice nod to the original story. Honestly though, just about every spunky, super powered, short, big haired hero/anti-hero reminds me of the Great Sage. Especially if he's voiced by Greg Ayres! |

Journey to the West is simply one of the greatest novels made, and I wish someone would just make a straight adaptation, as it's action packed, funny, and deserves a massive tv series adaptation that covers the entire novel.
The ones I have seen is the Great Alakazam which was fairly entertaining, and quite a bit of Saiyuki that was pretty good. It also has a helpful caption that proclaims that a character is a hermaphrodite (to be fair this is due to how Guan Yin image changed from a man to a female). Also the Dragon horse name isn't Oolong, the name you're looking for is Yulong Santaizi which simply means "Third Prince of the Dragon King". The Dragon horse kind of get's screwed in the story as his mainly used to transportation. |

I totally remember watching Monkey Magic at like 7 AM on some backwater station when I was a kid. It pretty much ended after they took down some villain, then Monkey met an old man and began traveling with him.

I remember watching it and being a little confused. Because I had watched Dragon Ball and DBZ before this and didn't know Journey to the West even existed. I asked myself, why does this monkey boy resemble Goku? He's a monkey and thus has a tail, he has a flying cloud, and an indestructible growing staff. Heh. I also remember enjoying it. The entire novel? The thing has one hundred chapters. I don't see how that would be possible without over 50 episodes. I suppose if you had multiple seasons to play with. Season One would be the story of the Monkey King, and end with him being overcome by the Buddha. That's seven chapters from the book. Season Two would appear completely unconnected, and would begin with the story of how Xuanzang was born, become a monk, and was ultimately tasked with fetching the scriptures. Be sure to include the emperor Taizong's visit to hell. That's only three chapters, but might be stretched to half a season. Then ten more chapters to start the journey and assemble the monstrous disciples, with flashbacks to chapter 8. That should finish Season Two. At this rate, the remaining 78 chapters will take six more seasons. (There is a reason Waley put out an abridged version.) On a separate subject, there are references to Journey to the West all over the place. I remember a Lupin III episode where Lupin plays the part of the monkey king. |

Huh, that makes two things I thought I knew that now I'm glad I was corrected on: One, I somehow got it into my head Goku Midnight Eye came out on DVD at some point, but this must be because I never really checked and for some reason assumed that it must've since it ran on the Action Channel in the early 00's (brilliant logic, me!).
The other, I'd heard of Shinzo/Mushrambo and knew it played in other countries, but somehow never knew it actually aired over here. I didn't really watch Toon Disney or Jetix much or anything, but I'm surprised I somehow missed all mention on the internet all that time... |

You forgot that his title from Heaven also included a fancy-schmooze post which basically means "Caretaker of the Heaven stables". Needless to say, Sun Wukong wasn't amused when he found out.
If you want a relatively unabridged and entertaining version, I suggest the HK TVB liveaction version (more info on crunchyroll) http://www.crunchyroll.com/library/Journey_to_the_West though this being TVB, I am pretty sure they altered some parts. |

The thing about Dragon Ball is we (or rather the Japanese viewers) didn't know about Son Goku's alien ancestry till about the time of Raditz's appearance in Z. I imagine it was quite a shocking twist for those that read the manga/watched the anime at the time. The Superman/Heavy Science Fictional elements didn't come until Goku's adulthood. In America, it was just straight into that. The early Dragon Ball storyline reminded me more of Toriyama's earlier work, Dr. Slump. It was basically a gag version of Journey to the West that slowly evolved into martial arts science fiction adventure. In short, it had a little bit of everything encompassing the 42 volumes.
As far as my favorite versions of Goku go. I like Tezuka's take on it as well as Toriyama's of course. |

I remember buying a very bad quality version of this film on vcd in China when I was still a kid. I don't remember that much from watching it, but the Monkey King's fights with the various deities in the film was pretty awesome. |
