Angry Expo goers upset the best guests are going to be at the other convention that weekend?

It's really sad that people do these sorts of things. Most of the time, nobody benefits from what hackers do, and it's just about stroking their egos. And in this case, it makes it look like some AX attendee got upset about another con competing against that one. Even if that isn't what happened, it still looks that way.

People should be allowed to go wherever they want without some idiot trying to sabotage their fun. And if there is enough interest in conventions that two can go on at the same time so close together, then we should be happy about that.

Maybe but they do get Scandal.

To me its hackers will always be so its a bit of shame on AM2 for allowing their site to be hacked - AM2 would be a prime target (as would AX). I never read how long the hacked site was up, but if it was more than 5min I just must give them a facepalm.

Sites don't 'let' themselves get hacked - like people smacking their car doors into your car despite parking out in the boonies, it happens. There are groups that specialize in hacking, such as the infamous lulzSec group right now. If the CIA, Sony and Sega can be hacked, what makes you think that less secure sites like AM2 can't be hacked?

I find it sad that someone had to hack into the site and do that. What did it accomplish? Some angry posters? Geez...it's not like they cancelled the con and dismissed the guests.

I'm a Anime Expo loyalist living in Anaheim, and I have more of a chance to go to AM2 if I want then having to driving to LA for a con, and if I have a chance I plan to stop by AM2 just for a peek before heading to AX.

For whatever reason someone would hack into their site (or any site for that matter) just to disturb the community is very childish and stupid.... but to try to blame someone going to another anime con without knowing who was responsible and their motives (hackers have their reasons, who knows...) is wrong in itself. It's like blaming the kid next door for breaking your window just because you don't like him, yet you never saw him actually do it.

The truth is all kinds of websites are having this kind of trouble nowadays (Playstation Network, the CIA, Google, Sony Pictures, India.... the list goes on). This is just another example that companies and events gatherings need to be prepared for, and it looks like AM2 was able to recover rather quickly.

I can only hope that if the AX website is hacked that their people can recover just a quickly...... now would it be fair to blame a AM2 attendee if THAT happens??? Confused

I was listening to a show on NPR recently where they interviewed this (in)famous hacker who had one time hacked into the CIA. He was saying that back in his day, hackers were doing what they did mostly because of the fun, and the thrill of "going somewhere that is forbidden, and figuring out the complex puzzle hidden in the forbidden place".

He also said that very few hackers today do it for that reason, and that they are all in it for profit. Some are even paid (by business competitors - under the table) to do it to rival businesses. Very few modern hackers do it purely for the lulz. Their object is money. --at least that's what this guy was saying.

You make a good point, money or other personal gains makes sense.... I only worry just how far these hackers are willing to go....? Confused
