I like the sound of this movie - looking forward to it.

I hope to see Goro step into his own shoes rather than try to fill his father's. I mean, nothing wrong continuing some traditions (strong female characters Smile), but I hope he tries to find his own style. I look forward to see where he goes.

A film about an ordinary girl coming of age in the 1960's? Maybe Disney will actually release it in the US this time Rolling Eyes

Wow, a Japanese anime movie trailer that doesn't suck :0

I need the longer version of that song right away.

How many Ghibli films have they not released? I thought it was just Only Yesterday.

Ocean Waves, released in the UK only.

I never knew that. I suppose they thought it was two slow paced. Which doesn't bode well for this, since it seems to be firmly in the Takahata "slice of life" category, instead of being a Miyizaki-style fantasy.

It had nothing to do with Disney anyway, it was our Optimum Asia distributors what licensed it. I think Disney didn't pick it up as it's not tenet to the usual Disney dogma. In short, too mature in premise.

The movie's coming out in only 12 days, so I've been wondering where all the trailers and TV spots were! Anyway, looks great, and I can't wait to watch it on release day. Early reviews are quite positive, and people seem to think Goro got it right this time, which I'm glad to hear.

Though anyone else a little confused by astral-projection-kid falling crotch-first out of the sky onto our protagonist at the end there?

Disney-Tokuma Deal

"I Can Hear the Sea/Ocean Waves" was not included either, probably because it was a film made specifically for television.
[Ed: Disney would also have to negotiate with the TV station and possibly other rightsholders/advertisers.]

What's Changed?

The agreement between Tokuma and Disney has evolved over time to include items not covered under the original plan.

* DVD rights
* "I Can Hear the Sea/Ocean Waves"
* - released on DVD by BVHE Japan Home video distribution in Taiwan through BVHE Taiwan

These changes were never formally announced and we can only guess at the current state of the deal.

The fact that to date Disney still doesn't have it, says it all. Wink

Does anyone else think that the tune of the theme song sounds rather similar to the Laputa song?

Whether positive or negative reviews, it doesn't matter to me. I in fact love the underappreciated 'Tales from Earthsea' movie, but I do get the impression that his next film may have been made more within his comfort zone, and just might prove his worth as a filmmaker to the rest of the world. In short, it looks like a nice film, I'm looking forward to it.
