I wonder if it will do as well as in Korea (5th place during the opening week-end) or Taiwan (3rd place during the opening weekend)...

And 2000 screens... Shocked

That's how you release an anime film.

So what's going on with China's limitation/suppression/whatever it is called on animation from other countries especially JP? I thought China is limiting anime and stuff there to produce their own stuff.

Pfft...That's like asking why Ash from Pokemon still sounds like a 15 year old girl. Here's another question:

Will Conan ever solve a case.... SPACE?
Because that would be awesome~ Cool

The problem I see is that Quarter of Silence is no where near as good as Raven Chaser.

Well, I got my answer, apparently the film opened at 2nd place behind 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes', so I guess it did quite well.

It's good to know that japanese animated movies can actually succeed in China mostly because if studios make more money that way, they might reinvest (part of) it in the production of new interesting anime material.

The reinvesting is so automatic at this point in the Conan movie franchise that each movie has confirmation of the next after the credits.

Actually, according to 'Directory of World Cinema: Japan', movie franchises such as Doraemon, Detective Conan or Pokemon give a studio such as Toho a more stable stream of income which they then use to make other less profitable anime movies or live actions movies (these have higher costs). Of course that doesn't mean they're not milking these franchises or making profit out of them.

Maybe you're aware of the announcement of the establishment of a new company 'All Nippon Entertainment Works' which will acquire film rights of Japanese anime and toys and produce movies in Hollywood with producers in the US. Well, a lot of people were either pissed or worried by that announcement, however I think that the fact that anime gets more exposure around the world is a good thing since it will probably give a boost to the anime industry which has been declining in the past few years.

I understand the scepticism towards cash cows, but I think they've become a necessity for the anime (and japanese movie) industry.

So you simply mean money they make goes back into the company to produce more stuff, yeah that happens. Although I don't think the money comes marked as being "From Conan movies" , "From China theaters" , or "For a certain less profitable movie." As long as the project makes more money than it cost then being less profitable than some big name show is a non-issue. I just found the your comment the companies might reinvest the money from the Chinese release back into more interesting anime to be insulting and superfluous considering that they make money by investing in future products..

I haven't formed an opinion about the All Nippon Entertainment Works announcement but when and if I do the comment will be made in the thread dedicated to that particular bit of news.

Of course, but not all movies are profitable. And having some sort of 'cushion' via these popular anime movie franchises (even the 'not that profitable' ones) is a good thing in that it allows studios to take more risks in their production, risks that they might not have taken otherwise.

Except I didn't say 'more interesting', I said 'new interesting'...I guess the confusion is possible, but I had absolutely no intention of being insulting.
