Will be interesting to see if this takes off. Generally, the reason the collection of anime cells is popular (and also why they usually increase in value) is because the cells are from the actual anime, and are not reproductions.

Very true. Reproductions don't have the same value as originals and probably never will, in our lifetimes anyway.
The thing about animation cels is that, with originals from the actual production of the show, there is only one cel of any given overlay, for any given frame, which can make them quite valuable, especially if they're from popular scenes of popular shows. Sometimes duplicates are made but not many. With reproductions, they can make as many as they want, which tends to make them somewhat less valuable. Because of this, one should only buy reproductions if one really likes the art, but not as investments. I used to have several Disney reproduction cels from some of Mickey's earliest movies. The art was neat, but, even though I had them for several years, their value never changed from what I paid for them. Now, we're talking about Mickey Mouse here, so they weren't exactly cheap when I bought them, and they didn't lose their value, but they didn't gain value either. I eventually sold them for pretty much what I paid for them. Something to keep in mind. |
