While I'm aware that Anime and manga publishing Industry is not doing well, but the attendance? To me, I'm see more and more people at conventions.

Well, yes. The young audience continues to grow and it'll take a few years for the previous young audience to either grow out of the fandom or stop attending conventions. Many attend for the experience and to be around others like them. Heck, there are people who'll attend broke, with just enough money for attendance.

Is this kind of like a "Tokyo Anime Festival" in the United States? Sounds kinda like it to me, and it might be a positive thing for anime in the U.S..

They are. Anime conventions grow each year in attendance. It's just most anime fans just torrent/watch fansubs the day they air/release in Japan than wait and actually buy the manga/anime, so sales aren't really the main factor of showing how many people like anime/manga.

AFAIK this basically a "trade/industry conference" like many industries/fields have. This one just happens to be for folks who run anime conventions.

From what little of the e-mail conversation I followed, it's exactly that. It's a place for anime convention runners to come together to share and discuss ideas and plans and try to make everyone's convention that much stronger.
