Just goes to show others, the handheld market is still there and while it's not as prevalent now as this was during the 90's, the fact this exists in 2012 is amazing enough.

Especially given that I keep hearing that said market is "done for." But then again, the internet is full of opinions, so to each their own I suppose.

It's actually an impressive system with great potential. I got the pre-order bundle which included a 4GB memory card, exclusive case and Little Deviants game.

Uncharted looks beautiful and the optional touch controls work very well. I like how they added elements to the gameplay that make clever use of the touchscreen. One such is I had to do a series of rubbings and then piece them together to solve a puzzle. I look forward to seeing what else is in store.

Lucky for me, I had already got my tax return so this was an easy purchase!

Yeah, they all say that. But many of us out there want to play on handheld devices that's NOT just short games like Angry Birds. It's successful, but lots of people (like myself) DO grow tired of short, repetitive games like that, and actually want to play full games on the go.

Despite the economy, I'm not impressed with these numbers. These are worldwide numbers, which, I assume, also includes Japan. 1.2 million units is not that impressive considering how many people play video games.

I think people are still on the hedge about this one. Yeah, the Vita is a nice system, but I can't imagine that I'm the only one out there that doesn't like the fact that unless you buy the games through the PSN that you can't use your old games. Also, a lot of people will wait until a second or third generation of a new console comes out as there are generally significant improvements, hopefully one of which will be that 5 hour battery life.

Your right. Sony is actually spinning and deceiving people. According to VGCharts 300,000 Vitas were sold in North America the first week, 100,000 in Europe and since December 800,000 in Japan.

300,000
100,000
800,000

=1.2 Million.

Vita's NA launch was lackluster to say the least.

It may be spinning ~ but if they are giving the right numbers, how are they deceiving people? It either is 1.2m worldwide or it isn't.

Given the full on government-created recession in most European countries and the US still over 8% headline unemployment two and a half years into the GDP-recovery, lackluster sales for a high end personal toy is probably to be expected.

However, it likely would have done better ~ at least in the US and Japan, likely nothing could sell a personal toy at that price in Europe right now ~ if it lived up to its potential as a pocketable video streaming device by supporting either Flash video or the HTML5 video tag. There was probably a bit of cursing inside Sony somewhere last year when Adobe announced that it was shutting down Mobile Flash development. Two more months and the Sony Vita could well have been in under the wire.

I'm really enjoying my Vita. A lot of the "smartphones killed portable gaming" folks don't take into account the different expectations of what people want from a game. The Vita and 3DS are aimed at people that want a portable game with more meat on its bones. Smartphones work for quick bursts, but they aren't so great for hours and hours of playing.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the deception here, either. It certainly sounds better to go with the 1.2 million over breaking it down, but that VGCharts data says that Sony is being accurate, and not deceptive.

Tell me you didn't cite VGchartz as a legitimate source of information. Laughing

This, it is an amazing system and there are already a ton of excellent games even just in this launch lineup.

And as a bonus even PSP games look and play far better than ever on that crazy good OLED screen (which makes almost everything look far better and with better colors) and with the new second analog, especially anything that used 3D camera aiming like say 3rd Birthday which already looked incredible and played quite well but now plays incredibly when using the feature of moving the camera control to the right analog stick (This info is everywhere but just in case: Hold the touch screen for a few seconds when in a PSP game and it brings up the configuration controls where you can move certain controls to the other stick).

Totally agree with this, and they repeat it so often it's really freaking annoying.

Because they aren't breaking down the actual numbers and are trying to create the impression that Vita is successful when in fact its not.

300,000 units in one week is pretty unimpressive to say the least. I would have expected 500,000 to be strong and solid for a launch of a handheld.

Typically when a company tries to cheat they mean units shipped to stores or wholesalers, not actually purchased by consumers. however, in this case I think they are talking about people buying them but I honestly don't know anyone who has or wants one but the vita was sold out at target - but so was the PSP and usually the Wii.

That's what I was thinking... I don't know when people will stop using that site (or when it will stop making up silly estimates for games...) I hear the ONLY real numbers they actually use, are ones that were officially revealed by a company to the public :/

And I still don't see why people think the sales are so negative:
-it just came out
-it's $250
-it's in direct competition with the 3DS, which many people already own
-wait for more system-sellers to come out, and the numbers will grow even more

I for once, am positive for the amazing new handheld. Unlike the 3DS, I have not seen ANY Vitas traded into a Gamestop, whereas I remember seeing several 3DSs already used on its first week... I think this means that people are enjoying their Vitas. I know I am.

I wonder how accurate those numbers are of 1.2m were sold worldwide, since they seem to suggest 0 sold in Australia, South America, or Southeast Asia. And while I know that Blunty3000 bought his as an import from Japan, I'm thinking more than 0 were actually bought in Oz.

Is that perhaps ~800,000 Japan and East Asia, ~300,000 the Americas, and ~100,000 Europe and other PAL countries?

However, I don't see how "they didn't break it down" seriously counts as "deceiving". They stated it as worldwide sales. If the complaint is, "they are using strong sales in country A to cover for lackluster sales in country B" ... that implies strong sales in country A, which would be good news. If the complaint is, "when you take 1.2m worldwide and think about what kind of averages sales that means per country, its pretty tame" ...

... well then, it would be the fault of the reader if they say "1.2m worldwide sales" and didn't think about what kind of average sales that means per country.

To be fair, 300,000 units ---in February--- is actually better than I expected.

Like me, I figure that lots of people will use their tax refunds to finance their purchase. However, not everyone does their taxes right away. Instead of seeing a large, out of the gate sales figure like you would during the holiday season, I see the sales showing a more slow but steady pace. Too bad Sony couldn't have been ready in time for Christmas!

I hope they'll put an RSS feature or app on there, I miss not having to download my podcasts on the go from my old PSP.
