I hate Akio Takami's characters from Kanokan and I can't say I'm liking them here either. I was planning on giving this at least an episode since the premise is pretty weird, but I'm not even sure I want to do that now.

No, they just look how REAL women/teenage girls look like. Real wonen have hips. I'm not sure why you are surprised by this fact. |

I think the surprise is that it's in an anime, which is NOT the norm. Nothing wrong with women young or old with wide hips. I can tell you right off the bat the sexiest woman in anime for me is Mizuho Kazami in Please Teacher/Onegai Teacher and she was full bodied  Will the girls in Upotte be as full bodied? I doubt it.

It really depends on where. I can guarantee you in many parts of the world this is not the case at all. In the US, NZ, UK, that might be the closer to the norm... However while the Upotte girls (likewise Kanokon, Ladies vs Butlers) are drawn with the extra meat in all the right places and none in the wrong places, those in real life also tend to pack in the weight or flab on the underarm/triceps, belly, and bottom buttocks/overhang, etc |
