I saw this coming when I initially read the article. Hilarious that this guy thought he could win a case without sufficient evidence though.

Good. He doesn't deserve a dime.

US$1 billion in punitive damages
I laughed out loud very hard when I read that.

I also noticed his only live copyright that I can find in the information given...was from 2004. Saint Seiya debuted in the US in 2003...so yeah. Glad the outcome is how it is.

Is Potter trying to sue Toei for content similarities or just for titular similarities? Either way, Saint Seiya was originally serialized and animated in 1986 and his first "Zodiac Knights"-related copyright was filed in 1995, so I actually kind of want to see how this turns out if he continues to try and file charges against Toei with insufficient evidence just to see if he somehow ends up being screwed over.

IIRC, the reason why lawsuits usually have high numbers is to at least cover any possible unforeseen circumstances, which is determined at the conclusion of the trial, if any success.

I believe it's also fairly rare for damages to exceed the amount asked for. Using absurd numbers also gives you more room at the negotiating table.

The plaintiff and his brother Samuel J. Potter, under the name Potter Boys' Creations, obtained copyright protection for a drawing entitled "Zodiac Knights 2000" on October 10, 1995.

It's a good thing Saint Seiya existed 10 years before his idea then.

Also using the Zodiacs motif for warriors is fairly common in media these days. Final Fantasy Tactics, Kamen Rider Fourze, Beyblade Metal Fight, Ryuusei no Rockman. Not sure if Saint Seiya was the first, but it's hardly an original concept in this day and age.

But yeah, I have no idea how this guy would think he could win this lawsuit in the first place.

You should've done it in a Horatio Caine one liner style. That would've been more hilarious. Very Happy

This reminds me of when Gene Simmons' son tried to say that Bleach was a rip-off of his work when he was the one that copied entire panels from it. Anyway, this guy was completely retarded to think that he could claim copyright infringement on a property that was 20 years old by the time he filed the suit. He didn't even start working on his property until almost 10 years after the original had already been created....why the courts would even hear such a stupid argument is beyond me. It's just a waste of tax-payer money...
