Correction: The Tenchi Muyo episode that aired on Adult Swim was from the 3rd OVA series and if i'm not mistaken, that series never aired on Cartoon Network at all so it really shouldn't count as a rerun.

I haven't watched AS in years, but Toonami brought me back. That and the fact that when it happened the response on Twitter was ENORMOUS. And I heard a rumor that for that Toonami revival they had 1.4 million viewers that night.
So yeah, I think the demand is there for it. |

I'm a bit leary about what series they would put on Toonami. Would I watch CN because of this? Probably not. I don't have access to CN anymore due to a lot of bad programming.

Looking to recapture past magic is a timid, play-it-safe tactic, more appropriate for the boring summer movie season than late-night TV blocks.
[as] would be better off trying something new. My suggestion: stop with the same ol' same ol' action anime (Durarara!! and FMA:B, leading into a block of very crusty reruns), and go for crossover with deliberately outrageous anime like Highschool of the Dead and Yamada's First Time. Sell the fanservice with ads that call attention to how far over the line these shows go (and thus do the exact opposite of this Durarara!! spot). Titles like these would better match the cheeky sex-and-violence of shows that [as] produces for itself anyways (Robot Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Children's Hospital), so this new block would be easier to market than only-anime-fans-like-it titles like Code Geass. |

I have mixed reactions on this. On one hand it's great that they played a block of anime like this and it received such a response and had really great viewership. On the other hand they did this on April Fool's Day, it is as if they were trolling all the people who ask them for more anime on CN. Except that they got one hell of a response, like lots of eyeballs on the tv (and their associated commercials) response. And isn't that what it boils down to? They're probably wondering if they put a recurring block back on tv and if it would get the ratings that keep advertisers happy and willing to pony up additional cash.
That and I'm a little bitter that I didn't know about this and totally missed it. I gave up on CN a long time ago and never thought to see what was going on there. |

1.) That's not their type of humor. 2.) More importantly, IIRC in one of their Upfronts, they mentioned that's a hard sell to their ad sponsors. |

Man, that would be awesome... I grew up on Toonami. Never would've gotten exposed to as many great anime series without it. I'd love it if the next generation of kids could have the same.

Interesting. I'll take your word for it. Hard to imagine their sponsors are any more delighted by the constant bloody decapitations and dryer-humping robots on Robot Chicken, but the success of that show speaks for itself. |

They gotta bring Toonami back with all the classic anime, I'd especially like to see Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon and some of the earlier Gundam series return, but also classic cartoons, like Thunder Cats.
Toonami needs to balance the anime/western cartoon flow. If it's all anime, it'll be lame. Also they need to bring back One Piece dammit. Would be great if they could do Fist Of The North Star as well... Last edited by Running Wild on Tue Apr 03, 2012 7:26 am; edited 1 time in total |

All my friends were talking about this on April 1st, it's too bad I completely missed it.
As for bringing Toonami back... doesn't it rather depend on what they're airing? New Anime? Reruns? Action cartoons? I'd like to say "if it's new anime, then I'd watch it for sure", but when Toonami was on the air, my only exposure to anime were action shows, which, for the most part, I'm not really interested in any more. I remember my friends and I thinking Tenchi was so cool because it was a romance anime, but now that I've found other anime closer to my interests I haven't been able to enjoy the new seasons at all. As for reruns like Gundam Wing and Dragon Ball Z, I've long since bought them on DVD, so I'd have no reason to watch them on TV. I nostalgia hard for Toonami, but in the end, maybe what I'm saying is... meh. (Or "Bring in some of the newer Gundams, or some non-action anime, and then we'll talk) |

IMO, Adult Swim Action got its start as Toonami's Midnight Run, so the resurrection of Toonami there would appropriate.
But perhaps a bigger question is are there enough viewers to support a revived Toonami block? With perhaps more people these days seeing anime everywhere but on TV, there might not be a sufficient number of people willing to tune in on a specific night and time for stuff they can either already own or can see whenever they like online. |

I'd love to see Toonami come back. As for what to air, I'd like to see newer anime aimed at kids.

Toonami and the airing of anime on Cartoon Network did more to create new anime fans in the US than any single other thing in the last 15 years. Heck, maybe ever. They shouldn't have canceled it in the first place.
BUT. The current attitude of Cartoon Network towards anime is one of general hostility. One look at their Adult Swim promos over the last several years is all it takes to realize this. The few anime they still broadcast has been very late on Saturday night, and even those are the few titles Cartoon Network paid money for the broadcast rights (as opposed to being paid by the publisher to broadcast it). Let's say they get over themselves in that regard. They're still not going to have the merchandising and home video rights to the anime they show, the way they do with all of the original programming they make. That was more or less the catalyst for why they stopped bothering with anime in the first place. But let's say they're not bothered by THAT either. Well, there's still one more giant hurdle they'd have to accept, and that's this: Dedicated anime fans don't watch anime on US television anymore, haven't for years, and aren't likely to go back to doing so. Oh sure, we haven't had much choice in the matter. But now that we're doing it, now that simulcasting is the expected norm, there's no going back. The huge online enthusiasm for anime has always been there. It's not like this is a sudden revelation to anyone. What struck them was how many people were willing to translate their online support into actually watching TV, and if you ask me that's not something that will last very long among the established anime fans. I'm not saying Cartoon Network should not bring back Toonami. They totally should. But they need to understand two things. First things first, there absolutely must be online streams of the block for the shows and the interstitial materials. Second, no obscure time slot stuff where only the faithful will tune in. Toonami introduced new fans to anime because it was running on weekdays after school was out. The existence and prevalence of DVRs is irrelevant, as setting it up to record a show is something you do once you're ALREADY invested. Then and only then, once all that stuff is in place, does the vital issue of what shows do they actually run come into play... |
