Well, it is kind of disheartening to Google a show and find ANIME247365.NET's (that's a fake site by the way) results show up before legitimate ones.

I can see this being useful to people who are legitimately looking for shows or DVDs to buy online. But I'm sure for anyone thats determined to bootleg something, they need only click over to the 2nd or 3rd page of results now to find what they want.
It will probably have very little affect on anime though, as on new streaming shows, theres only 2-3 places to legitimately watch. Would be a bit more useful for things on DVD I guess. Actually, this could be a boon for the legal stream sites now that I think about it, because I still run into a lot of people that don't know about the legal stream sites, some even including Crunchyroll. Since the illegal stream sites like *download site names removed ~Zalis* come up before them in searches I assume, people just click on those links. |

Eh it's moderated and tried to be kept under control. At least when I go on youtube some videos are deleted unlike other sites. Anyways the sites are only downgraded and nothing else. |

I doubt that this change can in any way affect YouTube's search bar, so really all Google would have to do is add a "Try a YouTube search!" link and forget about it.

What hasn't been determined is what Google means by "valid copyright removal notices". Considering the DMCA is the most abused copyright system ever made, I can see Google's about the enter the largest lawsuit it will ever see as a company. When we've movie and music businesses believing a link is copyright infringement, it's going to be interesting to see what happens next. Personally, I think this change is related to the Viacom v. YouTube lawsuit and Google's taking an approach it can use in court to prove the DMCA is an over-burdening system against copyright. 4.3 million in 30 days doesn't give me a single vote of confidence these are "valid" complaints. |

Then they should start with their YouTube. This site probably gets the most C&D letters in the internet

Irrelevant -- Google's stated criteria is takedown notices not compliance, so allowing YouTube to retain it's rank despite getting DMCAed left and right is giving themselves an unfair advantage.
Most people never go beyond the first page of search results -- studies so they rarely even scroll past the top links -- so downgrading is in itself huge. |

Nope, it's actually lower. Torrent sites receive the most notices which fall into Google's search results. A quick search yields the push-down has already started. By the way: YouTube does have one record: it receives the most bogus DMCA claims per day. |

I'm happy for this. Especially now that we have a lot of free streaming sites, people should know about the legal options first.

And they apparently get about 4.3 million a month. Not at all a lot, there will be PLENTY of time for their employees to follow up on those and make sure they are valid. Yeah, regular Google search will end up just like Youtube where trolls can get legitimate videos taken down for weeks at a time (and sometimes permanently) by filing BS copyright infringement notices. Relevant to anime, the Yugioh Abridged channel seems to get removed and then come back unscathed (after review) multiple times a year, always the same companies filing the copyright infringement notices, and the people working at Youtube not being smart enough to ignore them by now. If this is what Google search will become, I'll finally have a reason to stop using them. |

They can't ignore them - acting promptly on takedown requests is the biggest requirement for DMCA safe harbor protection; you have to assume they're correct.

Google and Facebook are both government controlled watchdog networks. I don't use either, and now even less of a reason to. I know i want to have a site bring me to where i can watch english dubbing of one piece, OH WAIT that shit is awful lol. Or maybe it will bring me to a site where i can buy english dubbed, and horribly edited manga. Oooh you edited out a whole chapter because it was to "graphic?" ooh thanks lol.

You really do have a point there, but Google to be really successful, they would have to completely re-write the terms of service and make it so the users that do upload licensed material would not only have the videos deleted, but also have their accounts deleted as well. Tough measurement, but preventing the licensed content from being re-uploaded and the same people from creating new accounts is even worse. But here is the problem, if a person really wants to view content (let's say licensed content in this case) chances are they will find that content and potentially share that content. That being said, unless Youtube were to (and this likely won't ever happen) to purge the entire website and even then, I don't think that will resolve the issue once and for all. |
