"matches sometimes feel out of control"

As a complete n00b who sucks at these sorts of fighting games, every match in every game I play feels out of control. Of course, that hasn't stopped me earning the wrath of my friends when my panicked random button-mashing inexplicably defeats their carefully-planned combos.

I might want to give this game a wide berth.

To me, the story mode is the best part of the game, and the fighting is 2nd. I loved seeing the new story with all of the characters I loved, and I completely enjoyed the story it told as well. I can understand how some people might not like seeing the same scenes, but it was good to me since you saw it in different characters viewpoints, with their thoughts, so its not like a simple copy and paste.

The story mode itself took about 35 hours and I've barely touched anything else yet, I dunno if I will though. The thought of just doing the same arcade matches over and over again isn't appealing, and in online play unless you're a top player, you'll just get owned over and over again so that doesn't sound fun either.

This game is one of the best FGs out in recent memory, IMO. It's easy for beginners while still being deep for pros. The only real problem is that Titsuru Mitsuru beasts everyone else, but shit happens sometimes.

Ryan: this game is actually filled with noobs online. Good players are rare.

The story mode alone is worth playing this game even if one isn't a fan of fighting games. The story told is probably gonna be what leads into Persona 5 or perhaps a spin off. They clearly just didn't throw a story into the game for the hell of it. What is there is thought out and has it's place in the Persona universe and the talk of the Shadow Operatives and needing to find out the mastermind behind what happens in the game clearly hints at something that could be explored in other games in the future.

The fighting in the game is great but I will agree that depending on the characters being used some of the battles can get so hectic it's nearly impossible to keep track of what is going on. Yosuke for example moves around so fast if one knows how to play him that simply keeping track of him is difficult and that is before adding in the animations of the other player.

I didn't really expect alot from the game to be honest. I'm a big Persona fan and I thought that the game was more or less gonna be hey what if we made a fighting game with characters you like kinda deal. But the fact that it was so much better thought out then that was really nice.

Well, as someone who completely stinks at fighting games (Especially in ones where critical moves are ESSENTIAL. I couldn't hit one of those if you put a gun to my head), I even surprised myself by getting to C level on online mode. Granted, my win % tumbled from 66 to 40 after that, but better than my Super Street Fighter IV where I think I won about 20% when I was active. So, yeah, very beginner friendly even if hardcore people will sneer at the auto-critical combo triggering. You can still be a smartass and use the auto death move if you're so huffy about it, even if it is the cheapest thing EVER put in a fighting game that's not a Mortal Kombat/SNK boss.

The story mode has some really good stuff (Labrys' story is predictable but nevertheless touching, and I could have a whole game about Elizabeth just messing around), but the problem is half the stories are essentially repeats of other stories, so getting through them requires a LOT of going through the same thing over and over. I still have Yosuke and Yukiko to get through because I know it's essentially going to be the same as Yu and Chie's. "Epilogue from Persona 4, Midnight Channel? WHY'D THEY GIVE ME A STUPID NAME?! There are so many people here cheering. Oh, they're shadows. Etc. Etc. Etc...."

Well, Yu kind of liked his nickname (I guess he is still the unpredictable deadpan guy from the anime Laughing )

Why? I like visual novels, and it gave me a great visual novel experience based on one of my favorite games.

I'm goin' to have to side with Ryan. Being a competitive fighting game player for nearly a decade, there has been way too many fighting games to buy and enjoy in the past 2 years. From the fighting gamer standpoint, P4U not only offers an exciting fighting game mechanic but also adds a respectable 1P story mode.

I'm sure ASW planned to have a good story when designing the game in the beginning. Let's be honest, with the Persona brand being what it is, its fans are the ones that will be clamoring for some story and plot progression rather than a foreign fighting game mechanic.

Personally what I enjoy is that I feel like this game has a level of entry that is the most accessable than any other fighting game out. Yes this game panders to beginners with auto-combos, but all the tourneys I've been to have the top players finding useful and more intricate ways to incorporate them into their play.

I don't feel like this game has a lot going on, especially when compared to Marvel vs. Capcom. And yes there's essentially 4 meters to manage but it's not hard to keep them in mind.

...Except this is not a visual novel, it's a fighting game. Is it safe to assume that you buy Need for Speed for the gritty character development?

Have you ever played "The Run"? For a game that was supposed to be a bit more story driven, it was TERRIBLE. I was hoping for some more of the cutscenes like the first 50 positions with the main character guzzling monster and trying to not pass out in a race across the country, but it just got bad. If you saw any trailers, you've basically seen the entirety of the game. The final 10 positions involve random people who I think you're supposed to care about(?) but in the end only get a blurb in the loading screen. And then there was the gameplay... "What...?" can't even begin to express the cluster of emotions I felt about the gameplay.

Connecting that to P4A. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a focus on the story. You couldn't pay me to try and play through any of blazblue's "story" mode (i'll take a detour to the gag ends just to finish it as fast as possible). I get a decent fighting game with some solid mechanics AND I get a story mode that's interesting, albeit repetitive, in my fighter? That's pretty nice.

That's Akihiko.

On that note, the localization is competent, though the constant use of Japanese suffixes like “senpai” and “kun” often sounds strange in spoken English.

Not really. Both P3 and P4's localizations used them as often as you'd hear them in Japanese culture. I think a lot of U.S. gamers are used to it by now.

You seem to be looking at this backwards.

Yes, most fighting games don't have very good plots, and by and large fans of them don't really care, since they are there for the mechanics.

P4A happens to have a good plot and (apparently) good mechanics. But for some reason people being there for the plot is...wrong? Why?

To be fair, I'd think it's fairly obvious part of the reason to have such a robust story mode set in this universe would be to attract people who may not otherwise be interested in fight games for the sake of fight games. And clearly it worked.
