Space 1999 is one of my favorite classic scifi series. It's a shame Anderson suffered from dementia during his final years. That's tough on the patient and family. Rest in peace.

I had no idea Gerry was suffering from dementia.
Despite how easy it is to make fun of puppet shows (See Team America) it cannot be understated the influence Gerry had in modern science fiction. He will be missed. |

Space: 1999 was one of my favorite Sci-fi shows when I was a kid back in the 70s. Such a cool show. I had no idea who created it, but am sorry to see him pass away.

I had no idea that Gerry Anderson had passed away. That's really sad. I did see "Thunderbirds" on G4 when it was Tech TV. I also saw "Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons" and "Stingray" when they were both on Syfy. Again,it's a shame that he's gone.

Space: 1999 was definitely a show I grew up with (had most of the toys and even a lunch box). While I wasn't really a fan of his other work, Space: 1999 was enough to put him in my personal Hall of Fame.

I use to race home from school during the late 60's early 70's to watch The Thunderbirds. I just completed getting the sets last year. I can't tell you how much this pains me to hear. First Jack Klugman, then Charles Durbin now Gerry. That 'happens in three's' scenario just plain sucks! R. I. P. Gerry, you'll be missed.

I fondly remember watching Thunderbirds on TechTV, and it's part of the reason I miss that channel so much. And every Christmas, they'd play a marathon! I actually bought the DVD set a couple years ago for pretty cheap, but haven't actually watched more than a couple episodes. RIP, Gerry Anderson

When Thunderbirds made a resurgance in the early 90's, I was there as a child to watch it. It was one of the most defining aspects of my childhood. I'll sorely miss Mr. Anderson; his work was incredible and helped shaped the development of sci-fi. Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet... It's just a pity that he was never able to get the rights back from ITV, and that he was never able to see a live-action Thunderbirds that lived up to the glorious series he created.

It's really sad to see Gerry Anderson pass away but nobody eternal. Anyway, I'm glad ANN mention this. Gerry Anderson and Thunderbirds was a major influences not only on anime but also Japan's Tokusatsu. I know Thunderbirds was popular not only in US and UK but also in Japan. Probably without him or his show UK wouldn't have this cool show from Japan X-bomber or Star fleet as it was called in the UK (How many of you UK reader know of this show). I also recalled that Eiji Tsuburaya (Special effect director for most of Godzilla and Ultraman's creator) was an avid fan of Anderson's work and Mighty Jack prove this. I would've love it if Anderson had collaborated with Toho (Godzilla vs Thunderbirds anyone?) and Toei (Super Sentai style Thunderbirds? or a Thunderbirds Super Sentai crossover)

Watch Ultraman, and I mention X-bomber (Go Nagai's Thunderbirds), and Mighty Jack. Also this is common knowledge among tokusatsu fandom. |

Gerry Anderson's work also inspired a whole generation of special effects artists here in the USA, too. Many who worked at the early ILM when they produced the first Star Wars movie would probably remember fondly how Anderson's work influenced them to get into the movie special effects business, in my humble opinion!
I am happy that the Japanese did enjoy Anderson's work and he inspired many anime and tokusatsu creators in the 1970's and 1980's. |
