I'm surprised to actually see a publisher create a branch to release adult content.

Why? What's so "surprising" about it, I wonder? Rolling Eyes

Isn't it a bit late to be saying that? Project-H has been around for years at this point.

What we should be asking is, who the hell is gonna pay 18 bucks for a Hentai manga when they can get all the freed hentai doujinshi they want online?

I mean I know DMP is one of those companies that primarily gets money from stuff like this *they've been pimping Yaoi for what, almost a decade now* so nothing new, but c'mon.

DMP: Because Manga doesn't already have a hard enough time being accepted as a legit form of artistic storytelling.

...*sigh*

What boggles the mind even more is this is the same company thats releasing the child friendly Tezuka manga's Unico & Atom cat later this year under another one of their imprints..... Bipolar much.

In fact here's an idea DMP, if the Tezuka stuff sales well, put more money towards that and stop pointlessly releasing this drek! M'kay!

Or keep releasing it because it's profitable. "I don't like porn and neither should you" is the same argument I hear from ridiculous extreme leftists and righties, for different reasons, but converge on the same conclusion. Apparently enough people are paying 18 bucks, or they wouldn't have added 100someodd titles by now.

That clear enough for you?

Comics are never going to be seen as a "legit form of artistic storytelling"; it's idiotic, but that's just how it is.

Until recently all the big licensors had hentai labels; what they're doing is hardly unprecedented - or unusual.

If it earns a profit, it's not pointless. If it offends you, don't look at it!

No, there is another company. I don't remember the name, but the company that put out Heart of Tomas (the hardback manga with all 3 volumes), they have a hentai line, too.

@Poly: A Fan Made Hentai is not the same as ripping an official product and distributing it, point is they can get the same thing made by fans, no need to pay for stuff like this. Unlike Regular anime & manga which you should support & pay for. But meh to each their own.

Even doujinshi artists are getting testy, now. Yesterday I saw a "NOT FOR FOREIGNERS" warning on one of them. She wrote in english "No reproduction or republication without written permission. I am sad if there is an unapproved reproduction". It was an original story, though.

Which is hypocritical of them.

Anyway, kudos to Project-H.

That is, HILLARIOUS! Laughing I can just picture it now "Darn these Gajin Dogs looking at this cartoon porn I made exclusivly for the eyes of my fellow otaku in Japan, darn them!" *Although for non pornographic, original doujinshi that are the equivalent to U.S. indie comics, such as the one your mentioning, I can see how that would be frustrating.*

@Dragon: Hypocritical how? A Doujinshi is a fan made *or indie* comic more often then not using a character the person who made it does not even own *AKA characters from Bleach, Naruto, OP etc* its not hypocritical in the least to look at what is essentially a "FAN COMIC" for free, thats like saying looking up fan-art of your favorite anime or comic character on deviant art is a bad thing.

But getting back on topic, I guess its not such a big deal, hey who knows maybe DMP will put some of this Hentai money towards more Tezuka acquisitions *Probably not, but I can dream Anime hyper*

That's not why.

This is why.

Foreigners scan and pirate their works, and make them easily accessible through various channels. All those art scan and hentai websites foreigners (aka, us) know about, the Japanese know about, and any of them can use it just as well to get whatever they want for free.

Gentleman's-agreement-grey-area or not, money is involved in making doujinshi, and it's been this way for a long time. This doesn't mean they all make a profit, necessarily, but breaking even or coming as close as possible to it matters. So when foreign people ignore this situation entirely and any sale to one of them could result in reduced sales overall if that person happens to scan it up, I'm not surprised some artists do this.

There is no grey area, unauthorized derivative works are not subject to copyright protection. Further, they refuse to sell these works in any reasonable fashion (toranoano is infamous for its "we don't ship overseas" policy which was deliberately put in place) to gaijin. Therefore, I have no remorse whatsoever when I hear them whine. You can't complain about people stealing your work when you are stealing another person's.

Abgrund has had some other...issues that make her testy.

Why are you so offended by the idea that scanlating derivative works might be in the same legal category as scanlating original ones? ALL creative works receive copyright privileges under regimes party to the Berne Convention, including ones that are illegal/unauthorized derivatives of another; a publisher that tried to print fanfiction without permission could easily find themselves on the business end of a lawsuit.

Even without copyright privileges, doujinshi are still a business venture so it's hardly surprising that the creators would want to try to create conditions that maximize sales. If that means refusing to ship overseas in the belief that they're reducing the odds of something becoming easily available on the internet, so be it. Not that it'll stop you from whining that you can't buy your favorite fansmut.
