Good review. I knew these movies were formulaic but I didn't know they went that far. It is a little odd Carl recommends a DVD copy of the first movie over a Blu-ray version (with three bonus movies!) that's only slightly more expensive. Ask yourself honestly that you would actually prefer one DVD movie over that bundle.

"Cold, terminally inexpressive Sesshomaru is one of the franchise's least interesting characters, and his rivalry with Inuyasha one of its least interesting relationships."

Are you kidding me? Sesshomaru is one of the most popular characters.

"It's a tolerable dub, but no match for the star-studded original."

This whole paragraph makes it sound like they were dubbed more than once instead of a gradual shift in style.

Yes, and he's still absolutely terrible.

How does his comment make him a fanboy exactly? There are people who enjoy InuYasha's dub you know.

Carl's review of the Inu Yasha movies reflect my feelings on the Bleach movies, and they're ironically both based on long-running shonen titles. The first movie by itself is rather good, and feels like a "The Movie" adaptation of the series with distinct elements that make it stand on its own. The sequels on the other hand turned repetitive with formulaic stories that build up to the same kind of general climax. Their entertainment level sunk rather than rose by the fourth and final film, making them feel just unnecessary. You can watch the sequels for fun or if you're a completist fan, but in the end you're better off just being content with the first film.

Considering nobody talked to that second user I'll do it. I don't find Sesshomaru interesting (okay maybe a little) since he has almost no dialogue. He is a cool and badass character but there is almost nothing else. His motivation to kill Naraku is really boring. Maybe in Final Act he starts developing a bit but he keeps being the same.

I think I saw two of these movies. The first I remember, but I cannot recall which of the others I saw. I do remember a particular scene and animation reel being shown over and over again, as if to hammer in how meaningful it was-it was an image of a sword embedded in the ground while some narrator with a deep voice discussed...something. It was so ham handed and annoying, and was the first time I realized that anime movies weren't actually all that amazing all the time. Laughing

Wow, I've never seen anyone actually use that verb.

Actually, I think Sesshomaru is very interesting character. True, he seems cold and aloof but he does evolve over the course of the series. He actually comes to care about the orphan girl, Rin. He starts out very hateful but slowly mellows over time. But he's not a character who wears his heart on his sleeve but he does change.

And what's all the hate for? Someone simply gave their opinion and everyone got out the pitchforks! It's not like the person posted in all caps,
SESSHOMARU IS THE BEST EVA! Geez. Besides, it's a thread about the Inuyasha movies. I wasn't aware it an I HATE SESSHOMARU/INUYASHA thread. But it seems the only posts that are allowed are ones that agree with the reviewer.

Wow an Inuyasha review I mostly agree with!

So glad to see another person who agrees with Sesshoumaru and consequently Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha's relationship= boring and lacking in depth. The worst part is that the franchise continually fed into Sesshoumaru's popularity (silver haired pretty boys are always big) by giving him substantial roles even when he wasn't at all necessary. I actually think the third film is by far the worst because of both this and some really god awful characterization.

I definitely think that the first film is the best. It's honestly probably the best piece of 'anime only' story that the anime ever produced. Imo. It gets to the heart of the story and the relationships wherein better than any other film. The portrayal of Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship is beautiful and romantic, even in scenes outside of the big 'trapped on the other side of goshinboku set piece'. I enjoy the second one to a degree, but I'd absolutely agree with the 'get the first one, skip the others' sentiment.

Actually, if it were't for Sesshomaru, inuyasha would have never found his father's sword. He didn't even know it existed until his brother tried to claim it. His brother was one of several adversaries he had strive against over the course of the story. Sesshomaru may not have been one of the more important characters, but to say he was completely unnecessary just isn't true.

Besides, Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship was the most important part of the story. And of course, Kikyo. Then to a lesser extant, their friends. Koga was also another character who randomly showed up, but I guess you could say he wasn't necessary, either.

Whoa, didn't know so many people held the first movie in high regard. Back in the day Inuyasha was big (I mean, big big) most fans I talked to found the first movie lacking, and liked the third one better. I could never understand them.

That said, I kind of like the third movie. Sorta. I agree Sesshoumaru is seriously boring, but I have to admire the movie for at least trying to be relevant to the series by exploring characters' backstories (even if they're not particularly well-written or engaging). The fourth movie is the absolute worst for me. It's like they got a script for a terrible filler episode and expanded it to movie-length. In fact, I can barely remember anything about it, and it was the one I watched most recently.

I never found the movies to be incredibly interesting, partly because they were inconsequential to the plot. I did enjoy the soundtracks. I also remember not liking the formula of the fourth especially. Oh, how I dislike films where characters are supposedly tied to a new-old problem, but we have never heard it mentioned and will undoubtedly never hear a reference to it again.

I actually like Sesshomaru, but was always disappointed by his film appearances. Over the course of the manga/anime, his behavioral changes developed. This makes for a more interesting transformation, augmented by his various fights with Inuyasha, Naraku, and others. (Wont say his character was handled perfectly, however.) In the films, they chose to ignore his attitude toward humans and, during the third, they made basically no progress with his and Inuyasha's relationship. Perhaps, to an extent, this can't be helped, simply because making any headway wouldn't mesh well with the anime or manga. Perhaps they should have chosen a different topic.
