Whether or not there was actually any inspiration drawn, I always saw this as a take on American action movies like Terminator or Predator, and it's a pretty good one at that. It is simple and shallow, but that lends a purity to the action. It is literally about physical danger.

Care to comment on the DVD's transfer? Any noticeable pixelation or artifacts?

Didn't notice any artifacts. There may have been a bit of pixelation, but it wasn't a major enough issue that it glaringly caught my eye.

Maybe they figured, since the english dub is all over youtube, they didn't need it?

I'm kidding, of course.

Why wasn't the dub included on the disc? Not everyone wants to watch anime in moonspeak!

Perhaps they couldn't succeed in securing the rights for it? Who knows, it certainly would have been a nice extra.

M-66 is a Bandai Visual title, so MJ might have come across the same issue at that of New Dominion Tank Police: BV didn't like the dub, so they didn't give MJ the dub for inclusion.

I still own US Renditions' version of this on VHS as well as the Manga 2001 DVD. One of my favorite OVA.

Minor correction: "Yoshio Sakakibara" should be "Yoshiko Sakakibara"

Well, it would be more than an extra. xD It's how some of us watch the program itself by default.

I'll probably pick up the old Manga DVD, but not entirely because of the English dub. I prefer to watch a lot of these older titles looking their age, and the old Manga DVD looks pretty authentic to how I picture an "old classic" anime to look.

It's sort of like Night of the Living Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre for live action. There's something about watching them in a lower (but authentic) quality that I love. However, there are some movies (like Casablanca and in anime, anything from Miyazaki) that should always be watched in the finest quality possible.

Owning both the new DVD release of M-66 and the old Manga DVD I will say that the new DVD release does have better video quality than the old Manga DVD. Of course the Manga DVD has the dub which I thought it wasn't half bad at all.

That's still somewhat odd considering Wings of Honneamise kept its old dub for the bluray release. And then there's that impossibly hard to find Ghost in the Shell: Innocence bluray that had both the 2009 redub and Richard Epcar's initial 2006 UK only dub (albeit not properly synced and pitch shifted several octaves down).

And what's the source on them having problems with Tank Police's dub?

Edit: Now that I think about it, didn't Maiden Japan's release of the Patlabor OVA's (which is also a Bandai Visual title) contain that abhorrent, literally non-directed CPM dub? If they can deny the re-release of English adaptations they don't "like", then I'd be sure the Patlabor OVA's trainwreck of a dub would fit the bill.

I wish Bandai would stop trying to ruin it for us anime fans. Their stance, as sourced above, of "We don't like the original dub so you can't use it and even if you feel like making your own dub we won't let you have the effect/bgm audio tracks to do so" is indefensible. I suppose by now we all know that satan will be buying a snowblower before Bandai decides to let those whom know the Western anime markets manage the Western releases of their properties.

If they won't let certain dubs be used now because they were crap from Day 1 then why did they ever allow those dubs to be published in the first place? Did someone truly fluent in English finally clue them in about the lack of quality in the dubs that they, Bandai, commissioned and now Bandai is hiding the dubs away out of what I'll call corporate shame? I'm sure there's an utterly ridiculous reason for Bandai's utterly ridiculous actions regarding their dubs but I don't share in their special insanity so I'm having trouble puzzling it out...

One of my favorite old dubs and the primary reason I bought it. If it's a trainwreck, I'd like to see the size of the train.

Black Magic M-66? I've only ever saw it dubbed so there's nothing for me on this release {It'll run on Demand eventually so no loss, no gain}
. But this is Bandai Japan's doing? Oh well, it's not like I would have bought this one with any certainty. New Dominion Tank Police, on the other hand, grrr....
