I'm still waiting for someone in NA to license it... Is Australia the only ones who have it?

There's a DVD release of the first live-action RK movie in the Philippines. Region 3, NTSC encoding, English-subtitles. Haven't bought it myself so I have no idea how good the subtitles are.

Hong Kong has it as well on DVD (R3/NTSC) and Blu-ray (Region A) with Japanese and Cantonese language tracks, and subtitles in English and Chinese.

It's interesting that they're going full-steam right into the Kyoto Arc. While I'm well aware it was no one's favorite, I think they could have made a good stand-alone movie based on the Raijuta story arc, and possibly have introduced Aoshi in there as someone spying on the organization, since the Kanryu plot from the Oniwabanshu arc was co-opted for the first movie. Even Sanosuke's old Sekihoutai buddy Tsunan could fit into a re-done Raijuta arc (one arc where the TV series actually handled some things in a more interesting way than the manga did), so I think there would've been potential there.

As time goes on, I start feeling more and more like Watsuki, in his revising of the RK plot for the screen and in the RK Restoration manga, kind of forgets what made the story interesting. I love the Kyoto Arc as much as the next viewer, but having some meat in the story before those events gave it a weight that it wouldn't have had if the story jumped right into it. How much of the Juppongatana can survive in a movie-format story? Taking them out would streamline the story and place the spotlight squarely on Kenshin vs. Shishio in their battle of ideologies, but it would become a fundamentally different story. Perahps it's my own lack of vision, but I don't see how it would be made better by that (even as, on the other hand, I can totally understand Watsuki's sentiment that the Revenge Arc would've been improved if Enishi acted alone, or with maybe just 1 or 2 people).

Still, the first film was pretty enjoyable in its own right, and I didn't feel it needed strict adherence to the original series to be an engaging take on the story, so I'm willing to give them a chance and see what kind of Kyoto Arc they can pull off in the space of two movies.

Still waiting for the first one to come stateside. Though if it does I'd expect to be from Viz since Warner Bros produced the flick and Viz does their releases through them.

you watch movies wrong. You should just watch it on rather it's good or not. IT doesn't matter if they don't follow the manga or books.
The manga material doesn't matter too much. Most manga has too many fillers. it's not necessary for the movie. Misao's story can take out, it's unless. Revenge Arc is boring and disconnect without the long flash back arc, i don't think they are going make a movie out of it. It would be much better if they make a movie based on the Tomoe and Kenshin arc.

Kudos on the photographer. That picture is gorgeous.

I thought the first movie was pretty decent. I'm interested in how they'll be doing Shishio. I'm guessing he won't be catching on fire, or it'll be CGI'd to hell. But I was surprised by the first, so who knows?

Really excited to see that they're making more Kenshin films. I have yet to see the first one (to my knowledge, it hasn't gotten a release in the states yet), but have heard good things. Kyoto arc seems to be everyone's favorite; I really wonder how they can adapt the story without it either being looong or really choppy film-wise for sake of adapting everything (see recent Les Mis film, which had next to no establishing shots or pacing). Hopefully they can either adapt the manga loosely or split it into two films.

On that note, I would just die from happiness if they did a live action adaptation of Kenshin's backstory. Tomoe is my favorite character in the series, and I can imagine a really picturesque and moving film given the right crew (director, cinematographer, composer). Though, Taku Iwasaki's score is so good I probably would just want them to recycle it Anime smile

I bought the DVD of the live-action movie from a video store in Japantown in San Francisco earlier this year. The back cover of the DVD says, "Japanese Version, Chinese/English/Malay Subtitles." I guess it's from Malaysia - ? Not sure.

The English subtitles are, well, they are not the best, but you can tell what they meant to say so it sort of works. Wink

The movie is very good. Really looking forward to the next two.
