Is it no surprise? I mean when does he ever NOT take first place. I don't think I've ever seen a director's film take first place because it was good and not on name recognition alone. Not knocking the man cause I think his work is great, but I'm kind of tired of feeling that he can't make one movie that at least drops to 2 or 3rd. I mean he's becoming synonymous with "perfection".

Considering those reports that Ghibli kind of need money right now, it would be in all of our best interests that it performs as best as it can and not be at 2nd or 3rd place for a while.

Wow. Didn't realize that they were having some economic issues. Unless they're really expecting to bring in some huge numbers. I would have thought that most of what the studio has put out had not problem raking it in.

Japan was one of those countries that was supposed to "save" Pacific Rim, but, while Pacific Rim has done amazing in China, actually exceeding the "domestic" (US & Canada) box office take (though it is my understanding Warner only gets 20% of the Chinese box office take), it's doing thoroughly mediocre numbers in Japan, opening at #5 and dropping to #6 the following weekend, only taking in about $9.2 million so far for its entire run.

Glad to see Monsters University doing so well, remaining at the #1 for the year in Japan so far (though it should be passed by The Wind Rises by the end of August).

Seth MacFarlaine's Ted is still at number three for 2013 (so far) at the Japanese box office.

I am thinking people assumed Japan would embrace Pacific Rim because it is about robots but they do not know the genre is already filled by their own works and foreign attempts aren't needed or desired. The market is competitive and they have large amounts of mecha anime and super sentai to overshadow it. I do not understand why people are surprised by this when previous American attempts at mecha have failed to penetrate Japanese market like Megas XLR and SymBionic Titan which also failed in their home American market. Maybe the reason they think is it is a movie and movies have a better chances to penetrate the market as Japan does not have as big of a movie industry as they do television industry so there is less competitors?

Even though people associate mecha with Japan, people forget that mecha anime and mecha products are actually kind of a niche in Japan too. Every Gundam show that airs is not guaranteed to be a ratings smash. In fact, the majority of mecha shows get very low TV ratings and are mostly supported by model enthusiasts (who themselves are a niche audience)

Here's some interesting new tidbits for Ghibli fans:

"Ghibli’s Miyazaki hints at possible Nausicaa sequel"

  • While appearing for a one-on-one interview during the Japanese morning talk show, Oosama no Brunch, Miyazaki indicated that he’s open to the idea of a sequel to his 1984 film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind – his sophomore film as a director and one of his most cherished by fans. The only catch is he wouldn’t be doing the film himself.

That honor would apparently go to acclaimed Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno.

As we explained just yesterday in our collection of Ghibli trivia, Anno and Miyazaki’s relationship goes back a surprisingly long way: Anno originally met the director when he was selected to help animate the original Nausicaa. Reportedly, Miyazaki was so impressed with Anno’s drawing talents, he gave the man animating duties for some of the film’s most complicated climax scenes. That, in turn, opened the door for Anno to helm the original Evangelion series.

Since then, Anno had long expressed an interest to Miyazaki in creating a sequel to Nausicaa, which makes sense as the film is actually an adaptation of just the first third of an epic manga series.

Apparently, Anno’s constant Andy Dufresne-esque nagging is finally paying off:

“I have no interest in doing a sequel to Nausicaa,” Miyazaki said on Osama no Brunch. “But these days I think if Anno really wants to do it, he should.”

You can see the interview (sorry, Japanese only) below. During the interview, Miyazaki also reveals a fun fact about My Neighbor Totoro: Mei, protagonist Satsuki’s little sister, was written into the film last minute – explaining why she’s absent from the iconic bus stop scene on original film posters.

"China gives big boost to Pacific Rim in box office, amuses many with weird subtitles such as “Pegasus Meteor Fist”

  • As of 18 August, the Chinese revenue was reported to be 618 million yuan (US$100M) surpassing even what Pacific Rim pulled in its home country. But there’s another reason why people are paying attention to the film’s Chinese release.

It appears that the subtitles were haphazardly put together. Reports of several simple but embarrassing mistakes have been circling the internet such as confusing “populated” with “polluted” in the line “…Hong Kong where it was most polluted.”

Stranger yet was a reference to one of the Jeagers’ “Elbow Rocket” weapon…

…which in the Chinese version it became “Pegasus Meteor First”. This might seem like a nonsensical and vaguely relevant name slapped on for dramatic purposes. However, fans of the Saint Seiya series may recognize it as Pegasus Seiya’s special technique.

Despite the other mistakes in translation, this reference to a beloved manga and anime franchise has endeared it to netizens of Japan so much that many now (tongue-in-cheek) refer to the Chinese version of the movie as having “god-tier subtitles”.

They want the Chinese version. Smile
