I just want this so I can watch the Dub with the Japanese subtitles on just to see what ADV changed. Seriously. That was a one of a kind dub. We need more of them.

I've re-watched this show so many times. It's perfect when I'm trying to clean and need something to listen to.

Ah, a true Gag Dub.
(though I'm still more of a fan of the Shin Chan dub)

The use of quotation marks in this article was spot on. Wink

For those who don't know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxJ4VWoeOzs

It's basically Hilary Haag, Monica Rial, Chris Patton, Greg Ayres, and Rob Mungle dicking around as much as humanly possible.

As "funny" as people makes the Ghost Stories dub out to be, I never found it to be drop-dead hilarious (pun not intended.)

There are some chuckle-worthy lines to be sure, but there was still too much of the rewritten dialogue that was playing it straight or being too serious. I've only watched about ten episodes of the Ghost Stories dub before bailing out, does it get funnier? I don't know.

In terms of completely "re-versioned" comedy dubs, I still think the Shin-chan dub wins out, just because they played it even looser.

I couldn't stand Shin-chan as the comedy fell flat for me (and felt forced; reminded me of recent seasons of South Park) and Laura Bailey's "boy voice" grated on my ears. Horrid. Back from the days when Funimation "comedy" dubs made me cringe instead of grin, as they have in recent times. Obviously YMMV Cool

I thought that the ADV dub of this was hilarious. You don't get Karbowski lines like "It's not because you're a bunny, Shirotabe, it's because you're BLACK!" and "Oh, I almost forgot, [HH]" from Funimation (IMO Karbowski was tedious and unfunny in their BGHK but ADV/Sentai make her hilarious...).

Sadly I'm not a fan of discotek in the least. I am mystified as to how Sentai Filmworks licenses Bandai's old anime in droves but barely bothers to rescue its own (ie:ADV's).

In the first episode the dub played way too close to the original script, as if the writer wasn't yet comfortable with the concept of the gag dub and never went back to do a better job.

By the second or third episode it's established a balance between conveying the basics of the original script (like plot) and putting its own jokes and spin on things, and its great. I particularly like how it twists the stereotypically sappy relationship the heroine has with her little brother.

Things go downhill again after a while though. It starts to ignore the original script rather than parody it and attempts at humor start to just be swearing or pop-culture references.

Shin-chan is a much better professionally-produced parody dub...and even that gets pretty old after a while.

I think the idea of a "parody" gag dub is cool for shorter things like say... Dragon Half or The Ultimate Teacher... but it seems with longer shows like Ghost Stories and Shin-chan it seems like the writers/localization team run out of steam after so many episodes.

Like I said, I like the gag dub for Shin-chan, but even that starts getting less funny and outrageous after a "season" or two. I remember people saying the same thing about Excel Saga: that while many episodes were funny, many of them fell flat.

This dub had me on the floor. Supposedly it wasn't scripted, and the voice actors are just doing ad lib. I wish more companies would do this with older bad anime.

Another anime that ADV did that also didn't follow the original Japanese script was Saiyuki. Just to a less extent.
