Freaky...

I remember reading something back when this game was first hinted. That they were concerned how this might affect Pikachu's popularity...

No, they were concerned that with the recent generations of Pokemon, Pikachu might fall into obscurity. So they wanted to make sure and keep Pikachu popular.

As for the image, it's probably just the raw graphics for a game that follows human facial emotions.

BREAKING NEWS! After six generations of Pokemon, child star and beloved mascot, Pikachu, was caught and arrested on drug charges earlier this evening.

Authorities have refused to release updates to the press as of yet, but we'll keep in touch in case any wild news flashes appear.

I'm pretty sure as long as the TV series continues, Pikachu will not lose popularity, or at the very least will not be forgotten. It's not like it was that popular in the games after Gen 1, or maybe 2.

This many years later and a stable of over 700 Pokemon now and they still can't get over their obsession and focus on Pikachu.

Well, if this does ruin Pikachu's popularity, then finally Clefairy can take it's rightful place as the mascot of Pokémon.

That said, seeing as Pikachu was completely absent from the Unova games, it's weird they'd be worried about it being forgotten. Though, maybe that's why it's the only Pokémon to get it's anime voice in Gen VI.
