I watched the special... and... uh... that opening scene...
I couldn't tell if they were killing the Nightmare or teasing it with food and beverage. It looked more like they wanted to hug the darned thing. And throughout it, the nightmare was crappin' bricks.

This looks like it will be an amusing movie.

This "franchise is at a blank page" quote concerns me.

I'm hesitant to look into this movie as it screws with the ending of the series. The ending of the series only worked because of the somewhat-unexpected irony factor (and I would contest the bit in this article about the cycle being ended) and the series only worked because of the ending. Screwing with that could cheapen the series. Given the quote, I am getting the impression that it already has as it has taken the franchise from the rather solid ending that the TV show had and put it in an ambiguous "blank page" place.

The shock/irony factor is gone from the series now-they played that card-and as that is what drove the series in the first place I fear that it is all downhill from here.

We all fear this. But the people actually freaking out over it really haven't seen the movie themselves (they've only heard about the plot) or their arguments about what they believed the series was about are somewhat faulty and, as a result, their explanations as to why/how the movie destroys the themes are unconvincing to me. Or I just don't trust their actual ability to understand all the Japanese in the movie.

It's not to say they're wrong. But until I see the movie with my own eyes and pick it up with my own ears, I really can't feed or dispel that fear. It'll be December before I can judge it myself. I definitely suggest others try not to let expectations from hints or spoilers destroy their enjoyment of the film. After all, the original series benefited from that surprise factor. A lot of Urobuchi's stuff does, in fact. So I'm not going to let anyone or anything else tell me what the movie is like/about until I watch it myself. =P

I'm not too concerned about the movie itself - Gen Urobuchi wrote it after seeing the series, after all - but I do harbor some concerns about the follow-up since last I checked he was bowing out with the movie.

Of course, what I'd really like to know is why the US is having to wait so long this time around.

Probably because the show was still being negotiated.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard spoilers. From what I've heard, it really doesn't sound like the movie contradicts the TV show, merely builds on from it to an extreme, but still logical conclusion. Also, from what I've heard, it leaves the door wide open to a wide variety of different possibilities.
