The work accomplished is tremendous,can't wait til November 30th but I think I'll wait for a DVD release of the 4 OVA before I get my hands on them.

That video serves as an answer to the stupid guy who was saying that Arise wasn't handdrawn. Duh.

Unless it's a CG element from the beginning, it's always "hand-drawn" at some stage, like on all of those sheets of paper. What people get their panties in a bunch about is if you're allowed to call anything that wasn't drawn, inked, and photographed on transparent cels 'hand-drawn'. Nobody uses transparent cels anymore, and Sazae-san was just a long hold over because it's a dirt simple show to animate.

How these half films are created is how most anime is made, except for the dawning of the full CG ones like Arpeggio. This isn't some special expensive process that no one else uses or some other ridiculous notion. Even the cheaper ecchi fanservice shows are produced in the very same method.

Yeah even if it were completely digital, starting life on a tablet with stylus instead of paper, it would still be every bit as hand drawn.

However, Studio Ghibli aside, most of the hand drawn elements now are usually for characters and static backgrounds, while the rest are CG, including water and SFX. If you can get the rendering of the mechanical objects to mesh well with the show, then I think the CG objects and 3D environments (required for dynamic camera work--Attack on Titan, Blood-C Movie, etc) combined with hand drawn characters are the best combination actually.

As long as it remains computer assisted traditional animation and not just plain 3D computer generated animation,I won't bitch about it,in GITS some CG elements are needed for tachikomas or certain action heavy scenes or cyber diving. Heck even the 1995 Ghost In The Shell movie had CG in it. and it's one of the most stunningly beautiful movie ever made. Production IG has the skill set,the rest is just maybe a matter of budget...

A neat little behind-the-scenes look. Oddly enough, just ordered the Ghost In The Shell: Arise O.S.T. CD not more than an hour before seeing this news item. After hearing the song that was played during the making-of short, I'm extra glad I did.
