Backward compatibility is important and it is a trap, ask Microsoft about that regarding Windows.

Backwards compatibility is not important.
It hasn't hurt the sales of PS3s or 360s. Hasn't boosted the sales of the Wii U. I think there is actual data out there that shows it was hardly used on the 360 hence they gave up. It's a feature a small group of core gamers care for. The group that also keeps it's old consoles lying around. |

To be fair, relatively not that many people had the 1st Xbox and games but rather just the PS2 instead. |
