Notice how FUNi gets everything Yamato related that's new EXCEPT for Star Blazers 2199.
I guess Voyager just didn't want them to have it, I suppose.

I'm surprised it took so long. I wish they would have dropped the "Based on the Legendary Animated Series Star Blazers" moniker on the poster. Most people who see that is going to know what it is really based on.

FINALLY!
I'm sure the Star Wars crowd will be underwhelmed but I honestly enjoyed this film more than the last Star Trek movie. Another remake, yes, but at least this one had heart and an original death scene! 
But seriously, I was surprised but what was accomplished by a film that had less than 1/4 the typical budget that a film like this would have gotten in the States. I honestly felt the production crew did an excellent with what they had to work budget-wise. And yes, Yuki Mori has never looked better, either! P.S. -- Sorry to hear what to the Yamato remake series... There really should be an article clarifying what the differences are between Yamato 2199: The Movies and the TV series. Same animation but packaged differently (edited)? More animation for TV, or what the heck is going on here? At least I understood the differences between Macross Plus as OVAs and the Movie but the Yamato 2199 is getting semi-confusing. Exactly who has what? Funi just has the live-action now...? |

I believe I speak for all of us when I say GOD BLESS FUNIMATION for FINALLY licensing this superb film in North America!! I'm not a fan of the Yamato/Star Blazers franchise at all, but I love this movie. It's a faithful adaptation that retains what made the original so well-loved while at the same time updating it and making it accessible to modern general audiences, which is what a film adaptation of ANYTHING, be it an anime, manga, light novel or video game, should do.
It pretty much goes without saying that I am totally going to buy this movie when it comes out. |

The live action Yamato movie is pretty forgettable, aside from a couple of the sets.
I'd rather they had gotten 2199. They'd probably handle it better than Voyager. |

Had I known this would happen, I would have saved my money from purchasing the UK Blu-ray for it. Wonder if they'll dub this one (it's beyond me why they never did one for Zebraman 2 but did so for most of their other live-action titles). Either way, from someone who's never seen the original anime, this turned out to be a kick-ass movie!

There were actually three distinct versions of Episode 25. Due to time constraints, only the second half, which had the more critical parts of the story, were to be completed by the time the final print for the cinema release was done - more footage would be added to the episode for the TV broadcast of the episode in late September, but the final print of the episode was only on the Blu-Ray/DVD release. There were numerous additional touch-ups done to this and other episodes in Chapter 7. The length of the episodes and other factors resulted in TV versions being different (and worse) than the final DVD/BD cut: - Episode 20 had the TV closing song for that episode and the credits playing over the top of the final scene of that episode, interrupting both the footage and the dialogue; - Episode 26 had the final closing theme for the TV broadcast playing over the final scene, instead of the epic Miyagawa soundtrack piece for it. - The opening credits for the second half of the series broadcast was just plain awful. Bad "blink-and-you-miss-it" footage, and a song that just didn't fit Yamato in any way, shape or form. Yamato's original opening theme by Isao Sasaki is a prime case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The JAM Project version of the original song was good enough for the whole series, and they should have stuck with both it and the original Hideaki Anno-storyboarded opening sequence. That said, it's almost certain the TV edit will never see a home video release. The cost involved in producing a second version wouldn't make it feasible for one, and it most likely wouldn't sell in any case. |

Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers is one of my favorite animes of all time. You get the sense of patriotism, heroism, sacrifice and believing in each other that you get the job done even if you are facing an impossible task everytime you watched this series or movie. I'll purchase the bluray version to support yamato.

Saw this movie at my local theatre the evening of Remembrance Day, November 11th. I had thought of buying the import version, but then saw the price. When it was announced the movie was going to be shown in the theatre, I took advantage of being able to see it before making up my mind about getting the import version. Though I liked the film, I thought the import price was still too much. Now that Funimation is releasing it, I might pick it up from them.

Also, for those hoping for this to be dubbed, forget it. Legally, it can't be, ever, thanks to the stipulation in Takuya (Kodai) Kimura's contract that his voice could not be dubbed over.

I've never really followed the story in any of its other incarnations but I'm a big Kimura Takuya fan so this is a must-buy for me.
