You think so?

People didn't seem to interested in the manga while it was running. I can't speak for the East but I haven't seen any real interest in this series from the West.

There are a few of us light novel readers on this board who are pretty stoked. It does enough things differently that I think those tired of typical light novel adaptations will like it.

This doesn't look like a serviceable fantasy. It looks like one of those narratives where the author missed what makes magic actually feel magical. How can magic, as a concept, flourish in what appears to be a dry, restrained setting? Where's the fun? Where's the imagination? It seems like maybe the author is fantasy fan; like this is his or her way of trying to make 'magic' cool. To be fair, I'm just predicting off the promo, right now. If I'm wrong then I'll be the first one to shed my assumptions and declare myself a fan. It just seems like a lot of anime dealing in teenagers with magic don't really have fun with it; 'magic' just becomes a catch-all term to define whatever superpowers the author wanted to endow their characters with. But just because magic is part of fantasy doesn't make it uncool; 'fun' and 'imagination' are some of the coolest things in my book. And I realize how important a prim and proper demeanor is to the Japanese, but come on. There are also plenty of anime that do cut loose and have fun with their fantasy worlds. Like Magi or One Piece. I guess what I'm saying is, what's the point of using 'magic' if you're not gonna let it BE 'magic'?

Its the biggest LN adaption from Dengeki Bunko since SAO.. it has similar sales numbers to SAO before its anime, too.

The magic in this series gives off more of a sci-fi vibe. It's been analyzed to an excent that it's a science. While there is fun to be had, the world is more grounded in reality. Magicians aren't too well regarded by the general population, and they are seen as a valuable military asset more than anything.

I think the reason why people don't like this here because the main character is overpower and incest.

I remember people said in the Problem Children Come from Another World ..... forum said that overpower characters are boring.

So it pretty much fits in with what I'm talking about, then? I just don't see a point in calling it 'magic' if you're going to ground it like that. I understand that magic as a concept in fiction is incredibly hard to nail. You need to give the audience just enough of a 'why' so that the magic doesn't feel random and unbound, but you can't give too much of a 'how' to the point where you spoil the mystery behind it. Magic in fiction is, pardon the pun, about casting a spell over the audience. Anime hyper I just don't see the point in calling it 'magic' when really you're using it as a catch-all term for 'Super-powers with arbitrary limits'.

And when I say "You're", I don't mean you. Anime hyper I don't mean to come off as attacking you, and if I am, then I'm sorry. This is actually something that's been bothering me for a while, and you just happen to be the person I'm getting it off my chest to.

This looks fantastic. Read the first arc in the manga and that got me mad hyped for this. I like ELISA so it's good to have her singing the ED.

They call it magic because it's still mystical in nature. It involves overriding phenomenon and manipulating reality. But yeah, I understand where you're coming from. Knowing too much about it removes the magic from magic.

I tried reading the light novel, but I only made it through 4 chapters. Sooooooo boring. Idk if it was the translator or actual author, but they stretch out a 3 second event into like 10 paragraphs where most of it does nothing but describe every tiny little detail about every little thing. I'm cool with tryingtomake things more vivid...but that's not even doing that. Despite that, I could still tell it was something that would be good animated

Yeah! You get that I'm talking about magic working in a narrative. They could've just as easily called it manifested energy or something.

when you can cast/summon ice, water, fire, ect what do you call them if they are not magic.

You guys always forget about anime. They don't follow the rule of what's out there and define logic.

You can use similar argument on anime swordsmanship, fighting style, sports....

Even Basketball, American Football in anime is not real sport, it looks like they have different rules in anime.

So yeah, anime magic doesn't have to follow any "Magic rule" out there.
魔法 maybe translated to Magic in English, but it means different things in Japanese and Chinese novel and myth.

They also have 仙法(divine magic?). The magic that gods use. 魔法 is more like demon magic in Chinese myth.

There are lots of things you can call it. Hell, you could pretty much have them wield technology that can conjure natural forces by scientifically combining molecules. Your comment really rubs me the wrong way. It's mindsets like yours that hurt anime in the western media. The mindset that anime is so 'weird' or 'abstract' that it's impossible to follow or get into. There is a logic to follow. Magic may appear in different forms and in different mythology, but the principle remains the same. And there is a way to properly incorporate magic into a narrative be you Chinese, American, or Japanese.

the title is the anime is "魔法科高校の劣等生".

ANN just translated "魔法" to "Magic", so you have look at Magic in Asian perspective.

Think "魔法少女", Maho Shojo, Magical girl.

Let me ask you something, in Madoka, do they use magic or not.

The title sure have in "魔法" again. 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ
