What a waste. Knowing Funimation they will most likely not give this a home release like Tatami Galaxy. Better it be on CR and have Sentai maybe snatch it up.

Exactly. I'm happy that it'll be streamed legally, but there's basically zero chance of it getting a North American disc release now. Oh well, at least there's Siren Visual.

Funimation has been quite clear about its opinion on sports anime. I wonder what changed here?

To be honest, Ping Pong has never been a sport that interested me..., but I'll probably give this show a try.

they are doing sub only releases now, so this could be one of them

I'll still be hopeful that someone like Sentai will give it a Blu-Ray release. They do pick up a lot of shows, and they're not averse to picking up sports anime.

On a side note, I'm still hoping someone releases The Tatami Galaxy over here. I'm still upset that Funimation hasn't put it out. Since they've put out a sub-only release recently, it shouldn't be a huge risk to go and do a sub-only Blu-Ray for Tatami Galaxy. Maybe with the Blu-Ray box set of it coming out in Japan, they'll reconsider.

I wouldn't count on it. Honestly it would be best if Funimation just stuck to mainstream and fanservice shows leaving more niche titles to Sentai or NIS with the former more likely to give it a dub, and more importantly a home release.

So here's the plan: if the show's good, everyone has to stream every episode on at least 2 different screens 5 times each. That way, the streaming numbers will be really high, and we'll get a collector's edition release with not only a dub, but a booklet, soundtrack and ping pong balls. Who's with me?

Seriously, I just hope the show's good and that I can withstand the temptation to watch it before it becomes available on Hulu. Also, I hope CR gets it for international streaming.

I am not sure but didn't Funimation license Tatamy Galaxy only because it was in the noitamina package?
The decision to license Ping Pong is entirely independent and not part of some deal with noitmanina,so it should get disc release.
Though yes a combination of sport and Yuasa Masaaki pretty much spells a financial disaster.

Wasn't Princess Jellyfish also a part of that package? Yet that got a disc release, and Tatami Galaxy didn't. Might just have been because Tatami Galaxy might have been seen as not worth dubbing, so they didn't bother releasing it at all.

For a second there I thought FUNimation had rescued The Ping Pong Club. I'd buy that!

Looking forward to this! Hoping a UK friendly simulcast site shows it though, otherwise I'm fat out of luck.

In regards to Tatami, Europe lucked out with the DVD boxset from Beez, which I still have and cherish (those subtitles! So fast!). Hoping that All the Anime will do a bluray boxset of Tatami sometime? And perhaps stream Ping Pong too? Please?

Fearing another Tatami situation. Also sucks because Funi doesn't stream any of their shows in HD on Hulu (and my TV doesn't have a Funi app). I'll keep my fingers crossed for a physical release.

Cool! I was expecting CR to pick this up, but either way I'll get to watch it legally.
RE: the people concerned about a physical release, remember that streaming licenses and DVD/BR licenses can be (and usually are, iirc) bought separately by companies. This is why, for example, companies can release things streaming on CR without being involved with the original simulcast. So I don't think it's totally impossible that someone else might pick up the DVD/BR rights for Ping Pong--at least from a legal perspective, that is. This kind of artsy show would be a risk for any company, I think. (Which may be why Tatami Galaxy is in limbo--not because Funi "has it" but because no one in the US wants to risk buying the rights to the physical release).

*sigh* Funimation...what are we to do with you? I get that you want to be Crunchyroll and get some of that sweet subscription money. But you just don't have their catalog. I mean, they've already got a half dozen shows I'll check out. And you've got two. I leaves me in a very tough position. I'm not gonna pay a monthly subscription just to watch a couple shows. Especially not when I'm paying one already for the bulk of my seasonal content on Crunchyroll. And I hate one week delays. A few days would be fine but a full week totally prevents the viewer from participating in any sort of discussion about the show because by the time you see an episode the next one has already aired. But you also always manage to pick up at least one really interesting show that I really want to see. It's frustrating.

Yeah, this is one of the few cases in which I think a monopoly is desirable. I subscribe to Croll but not to Funi, or Hulu+ which has a lot of Funi's things. Croll has more stuff and in terms of working consistently and vid quality is better than the other two in every way. Plus Hulu+ still has ads on a lot of its anime even if you're a subscriber (I saw it from my friend who has it).
